“Princess.” David lunged across the carriage into Elana’s arms.

Elana spluttered, ending up with a mouthful of his overgrown blond hair. “You have no idea how worried I was. You just vanished, and all that was left of your battalion was your freaking horse—”

He chuckled. “Remind me to give Goldleaf a few extra apples.”

“Trust me, she’s been pampered.” Elana shook her head. Her black waves bounced over her tan shoulders, bared by her thin strapless dress. “But you just up and left in the middle of the night.”

“I had to find Sam.”

“And you got lost trying! No one’s seen you in fucking months!” Her voice broke.

David pulled his head off her chest and froze; tears were spilling down her cheeks.

“I’m so sorry, Princess. You have no idea—”

“Sam told me everything. You’re not going back there ever again. And… would you ever…”

“Absolutely.” David slid off her lap onto his knees. “You can do anything you want to me, Princess.”

“You’re such a masochist, David.” She wiped her cheeks dry, messing with his hair.

“Maybe I am.” He shrugged. “If I can ask: what’s going on in Cerces?”

“Oh? Why do you want to know?”

“I’m still king, aren’t I?”

“General Cilen and I had to step up quite a bit in your absence. Maybe you are just a figurehead now.”

“People still listen to figureheads.”

“Maybe.” She grabbed his arms. “C’mon, get up.”

“Ow, ow! Not there, Princess, not there!”

“What?” Elana gently pulled David’s shirt collar aside to reveal part of his swollen shoulder. “Dear gods, David. Sam told me you weren’t really a gladiator.”

“I was, once.” David bit his lip. “And this isn’t from the arena.”

“So—”

“People can rent us out. Like, as slave mercenaries or something.” David wiped his nose clean with his good hand. “I met Luim.”

Her jaw fell open. “As in—”

“The castle’s old captain of the guard.” He shook his head. “He’s alive. And so is—”

“No.”

“The queen,” he finished. “Taria escaped somehow.”

“What? But I was told—”

“The castle was a mess, Princess. I guess a rumor started and no one bothered confirming it.” He stared at the carriage’s rocking floor. “People are never dead until you see their body.”

“I think that would’ve been good to know months ago.” She kissed his forehead. “I’ve been worried sick. Can I see your shoulder?”

“Yeah.” Someone had changed his clothes while he was asleep. His patchwork shirt, so torn it passed as a vest, had been replaced with a silk dress shirt, ascot, and coat. David carefully shed his clothes, grimacing all the way. Elana sucked in a breath. The bruising spread around his chest and back, reaching almost to the bottom of his ribs. She risked touching it, and David flinched.

“Sorry,” he muttered, shaking his head.

“Sorry? What ‘sorry?’ You look like hell!” She examined his back.

“It’s happened before. It’s my bad shoulder. After the first time, it started happening a lot more. It’s just— this was constant.”

“Oh, rebel.” Elana grimaced.

“Don’t worry. I heal quick. Give me a few days.”

“A few days fixes that?” She pointed.

“Yeah. Trust me, I’ve been through worse.” He touched the massive scar on his side that stretched from his spine to his navel.

“I’m sure.” She pulled his chin up and kissed him. David wrapped an arm around her shoulders and pulled himself up, once again setting himself in her lap as he deepened the kiss.

Elana pulled back, pressing her forehead against his. “I missed that.”

“So did I.” He kissed her again, but opened his eyes as Elana blindly fumbled with the button on his dress pants. He smiled through the kiss and relished the warmth of her body against his.

Even so, he gasped and broke the kiss as Elana finally managed to pull him out of his waistband. She wrapped an arm around his waist and smiled. “Let me work, rebel.”

He nodded, and gasped again as she spat on him and began to pump. He whined and tucked his head into the crook of her shoulder, thrusting into her hand. Elana chuckled, spat on him again, and pumped harder.

David nuzzled her neck, squeezing his eyes shut. “Princess…”

“It’s okay.”

“I’m close.”

“Do your worst, gladiator.”

David clenched his fists in her dark waves and grunted. White splattered his chest and dripped down his stomach.

“Dammit, look at this mess.” Elana dug under the seat, found a rag, and wiped him clean. “At least we didn’t mess up your clothes.”

“Yeah. Didn’t make any promises about yours, though.” David wiggled his hand under the hem of Elana’s dress. He felt her go rigid as he found what he was looking for, and she gripped his elbow.

“Don’t worry, Princess. It’s my good arm.”

She smiled and let go. David rubbed, a few times dipping a finger into her and earning a moan. Elana dug a fist into his hair and threw her head back. She tensed; her passage squeezed his fingers and soaked his palm.

David freed his hand and made a show of licking it clean. “Now this, this is a mess.”

Elana panted and wiped the sweat off her forehead. “Son of a bitch.”

“I love you, too.” He kissed her again.

“Guys, we need to move.” The carriage door was thrown open. David looked up, frozen, then frantically tried to stuff himself back into his pants.

Samuel reeled, covering his dark eyes. “C’mon, Dave, I don’t need to see that.”

“This can’t be the first time you’ve seen a dick, Sam!”

“Of course it’s not,” Samuel replied, miffed. “It’s just the first time I’ve seen your dick, kid!”

“You know I’m not a kid!” David snapped. “Close the godsdamned door!”

“Yeah, yeah. Should’ve known—” He slammed the carriage door shut and began pacing outside.

David clenched his jaw as he pulled his blazer back on. “I can’t believe him.”

“What were you on about?” Elana cocked her head.

“Sam’s basically my older brother.” David shrugged. “He was never really the same after we lost Aaron, though.”

“Aaron?”

“Yeah, Aaron.” He looked up, startled. “Oh, right. Aaron and Sam were together for a long time. I never liked him. They would get put into fights together, and Sam would get hurt and he wouldn’t. Aaron was using him.” David frowned. So many times Aaron would carry Samuel into their cage, once again having left the arena unscathed. David had to bandage so many of Samuel’s wounds. “Thing is, he got set up in a death match a few years back. He was the side that didn’t win.”

“Wait. So—”

“Sam’s ex died in the arena. Yeah. Sam doesn’t appreciate the circuits much anymore. He used to be really good, too.”

“I understand.” Elana set a hand on his good shoulder. “I thought you had left our quarters and never come back. I couldn’t do a thing without you. Thank gods for the general. She really took charge.”

“I knew Cilen was the right pick.” David smiled. “Sam vouched for her, too.”

“So did I.” She nudged him. “Now I think we owe Sam an apology.”

“Yeah, you’re right.” David rolled his eyes as he opened the carriage door. “Sam, look: I’m sorry—”

“Here come the lovebirds.” Samuel turned to David, his eyebrows raised. Behind him, a battalion stood at the ready, with Cilen at its head struggling to control her anxious horse.

David stepped outside. “What’s happening?”

“Sorry to tell you, Dave, but the war’s not over yet.” Samuel set his jaw. “We escaped the circuit in Katas. We didn’t stop it.”

Cilen trotted to Samuel’s side. “We’re going to take Katas.”
