If you grew up in the 50's and 60's and were intelligent enough, you could receive a free education and substantial subsistence assistance all the way through to graduating with a degree. Who can say they can achieve the same today without having accumulated somewhere in the region of a hundred grand to a quarter of a million dollars in debt, depending on their specialisation?

If you grew up in the 50's and 60's as a black person in the U.S., then you'd be used to a lot more blatant prejudice than what is expressed today. The civil rights issues of the 50's and 60's prevent me from admiring much about those days other than the people who had the guts to support reform.

The sad thing is that you can replace racial minorities with gay people as those that are being discriminated against now. Times haven't changed that much in a social sense: we just discriminate against different groups than before. The only plus side to this is that gay people are far fewer in number than our racial minorities, so the repercussions of our prejudice toward gays are less severe than the ones of racial prejudice were back in the old days. We haven't had any sexual orientation riots, so things are considerably more peaceful in some ways....
