Just wanted to pass on a little tip about beating the high price of gas these days. Companies generally put their highest price up first thing in the morning and then gradually drop the price during the day so the best time to fill up is in the evening. Hope this helps a bit.

holy moley! I'd hate to live someplace where gas prices fluctuate throughout the day.

Out here in the sticks they remain constant except when they change from delivery to delievery. (They constantly go up, but it takes a few days!)

Yeah and your best bet would be to get it at the beginning of the week. For some reason they just happen to jack the price up around Thursday evening, right before the weekend. Imagine that. :wowzer:

I don't drive and so perhaps this shouldn't interest me, but perhaps you people in the US would like to know how much petrol/gas costs in the UK.

From searching the web I gather that the average cost of a gallon of petrol/gas in the US is $2.63, with the highest price being $3.49 in Long Beach CA and the cheapest being $2.07 in Mount Pleasant TX.

In the UK, petrol is currently on average 90p per litre. That is the AVERAGE! When one converts litres into gallons and converts pounds into dollars, then that makes the AVERAGE price of a gallon of petrol in the UK $6.10!! The most expensive petrol can reach $7!!!

So be glad that petrol/gas is so cheap in the US. We pay about twice as much for our gas in the UK as you do in the US.

Hey whats new UNI???"!!.......

....our septic pals dont know they are born!!!

Quite!

But check out my minimum wage calculations under the "I got a Job" thread. (started by the factor)

...everytime I pull up to a gas-pump, I curse, and damn them to Hell, the current political admin!

I also curse them everytime I hear about another senseless death because of this stupid, useless to the masses, illegal ......WAR ...!!!

i know the Pain i Live in the Midwest part of the US, i know you guys pay more then we do i understand the greivences, i am in a low income family and having to pay for gas here where i live (regular unleaded 2.93/gal) for just my car and my mom whom i still live with at 20 -.- it takes a chunk out of our paychecks cause we dont run anything less then Mid-grade

Thanks for your replys people, I think the next car I buy will be a hybrid. It's a shame that after 30 years of research (after the arab oil embargo in 1974) we still depend too much on fossil fuels.

As Newcastle Uni has already said. You folks in the U.S should see the price us Brits in the UK pay. I believe 75%-80% of the price we pay is tax. If that level of taxation was applied to any other product that we bought, I am sure there would be a riot. The cost of crude oil does not just affect motorists, its affects everyone, as gas/petrol is just one by-product from oil. Oil companies at present have got us over a barrell. (excuse the pun) 🙂

I found this website to be handy. Just enter your zip code into the space and you'll be shown which service stations in your city are selling gas at the lowest and highest prices: http://www.gasbuddy.com/

Here are some helpful hints to help increase fuel efficiency:

1) Avoid High Speeds- As your speed increases, your aerodynamic drag increases in an exponential fashion. Driving 62 mph (100 km/h) vs 75 mph (120 km/h) will reduce fuel consumption by about 15%.

2) Do Not Accelerate or Brake Hard- By anticipating the traffic and applying slow steady acceleration and braking, fuel economy may increase by as much as 20%.

3) Keep Tires Properly Inflated- Keep tire air pressure at the level recommended by your vehicle manufacturer. A single tire under inflated by 2 PSI, increases fuel consumption by 1%.

4) Use A/C Sparingly- When the air conditioner is on it puts extra load on the engine forcing more fuel to be used (by about 20%). The defrost position on most vehicles also uses the air conditioner.

5) Keep Windows Closed- Windows open, especially at highway speeds, increase drag and result in decreased fuel economy of up to 10%.

6) Service Vehicle Regularly- Proper maintenance avoids poor fuel economy related to dirty air filters, old spark plugs or low fluid levels.

7) Use Cruise Control- Maintaining a constant speed over long distances often saves gas.

8) Avoid Heavy Loads- Remove the sand bags from your trunk in the spring and pack lightly for long trips.

9) Avoid Long Idles- If you anticipate being stopped for more than 1 minute, shut off the car. Restarting the car uses less fuel than letting it idle for this time.

10) Purchase a Fuel Efficient Vehicle- When buying a new vehicle examine the vehicle's rated fuel efficiency. Usually choosing a small vehicle with a manual transmission will provide you with great fuel economy.

I love this place because I can test a theory I have always had about British gas prices. Yes, they are much higher than the US...but do you not also have a very good public transportation system? That is severly lacking in most of the US except the largest cities. I've always felt like if there was an alternative I would take the bus to work everyday (I am about 5 minutes from work by car)...but that is not an option. Also I have to get my kids to their daycare provider, so I have to drive no matter what. Unless I lost my job. Then I couldn't afford the car anyway!

In some parts of the UK the public transport is very good. As a ex-student and a non driver I rely on public transport and its ok. The only problem with public transport in this country is the trains. They are SOOOO slow. I was on a train the other day, sitting next to an American tourist and his child. They were travelling from London to Edinburgh and the young boy was excited about being on a train. His Dad was encouraging the boy and said very excitedly "We're off! We're going to go REALLY REALLY fast in a minute!" He quickly realised that British trains rarely ever go really really fast.

Apparently 80% of the price we pay for petrol goes on tax! For 90p we spend at the pumps, the government gets 75p, and various people get the other 15 or so pence. Apparently the Petrol station makes only 1p profit out of every 90p spent!!! Wow!
I've heard that some European countries are going to make Petrol cheaper by reducing the amount of money charged in taxes. They are going to do this by only charging the maximum amount of money that they had budgeted for getting. The Chancellor of the Exchequer in the UK Gordon Brown is unlikely to follow suit, especially as he has massively underestimated the growth of the UK economy, which will be probably 2% at best and not the >3% that was predicted at the last budget. In other words, the Chancellor hopes to make some extra money through the petrol price rises, that would have otherwise been lost through the economy not doing so well.

I'm no economist (as you can tell!!) but here are just a few of my ramblings.

I have a gas pig in my pick up truck, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. I love that vehicle.
