It is now official. At 115am, Eastern Time, it was announced on Atlanta Braves.com that lefthanded pitching great Tom Glavine, winner of 303 major league games, and an Atlanta Brave for 16 years from 1987 to 2002, before spending the last five years with the New York Mets, has agreed to a one year, $8 million contract, to pitch for the Braves in 2008.
As a long time Braves fan for 25 years, and having rooted for Glavine during his 16 years with the Braves, I'm very thrilled to have him home with the Braves. I was very upset when Glavine left Atlanta to go to the Mets in
2002. It will be comforting to be able to root for him to do well as a Brave again. I cant forget that he pitched the most important game in Atlanta Braves history, Game Six of the 1995 World Series, won by the Braves 1-0, for their only World Series title to date. Tom was awesome that night, firing a one hit shutout for eight innings against the powerful Cleveland Indians.
I cant wait for the 2008 season to begin. With John Smoltz, Tim Hudson, Tom, young lefty Chuck James, and if injured pitcher Mike Hampton can rebound to pitch, the Braves have a good pitching staff for 2008 if everyone is healthy, one, that I think, can get us back to the playoffs.
Welcome home, Tommy. It will be wonderful to be able to root for you again, pitching for the Braves in 2008. Bravo, Braves. This was a great move by the front office, and one that I hope pays dividends for the team into October of 2008.
