I hate it for the fact that i have meet a select few awesome people online through out my years of internet use (now that we me and my parents and i have access to it finally after so many school years of not having it) and that i do talk to for months and months through email back and forth and we all share a real strong common bond with each other. And get all along great But we all live in such far far away states from each other. That we will never ever have a chance to meet with one another in real life and get to know each other even more. :dropatear Heather!.......

That is my MAJOR rant and NEAT PICK about the internet at certain times.

Whats yours?

I would have to say the thing that I despise most about the internet is the fact that you never really know who you are talking to. You think you know...but you have no idea. (sorry for the pun)

Basically the same idea, except I am determined to meet someone, so I wouldn't say it's an impossibility for me.

But still, everyone cool lives so far away, so even if some meeting does get done, it's only for a few days, and afterwards everything is back to the way it was. So yeah...

Then what is the point of meeting someone from online in real life then at all, if it's ONLY going to be for a few days at the most?

Then once your done you have to fly back or use the train back to your home state.

One thing that really pisses me off about the internet is...

Pop ups, amd the fact that any webiste you visit can lead to SPAM in your email.

The fact that people ie hackers and virus planters abuse the system, which can also cause your computer to mess up. :Grrr:

The internet...like anything else...is what we make of it. Sure there are some jerks out there. Sure there are things we may not get to do. But, like anything else, we can take the best of it and make it work for us.

I met my hubby on the net. So did many others. We thought that distance would keep us apart too. It didn't. We have many good online friends. Many of them are far away as well. That doesn't mean that we can't arrange visits and stuff. We do so on a regular basis.

You really can't write things off that aren't perfect in every way. You'd be writing off life itself.

Just my two cents.

Ann

Text speak- Just plain why?

Pop ups- If anyone, ever, has bought anything from a pop up, I curse them unto the eighth generation.

Idiots who create female personas (mainly for fetish sites)

The thing I hate the most is the way anonymity makes people so bold. I can't even count the number of people I've met who are ten feet tall online and two feet tall in person.

hate=99% of the people on it (idiots)+(boring)

I fall into the 99% category then! :wavingguy

spyware, hackers, some online stores

I hate this as well. What do these people hope to achieve and why are government's so impotent to stop them. I am the most liberal liberal in the world but I would seriously consider reinstating the death penalty for hackers and spyware/virus creators. (and we don't even have the death penalty for treason in this country, so that shows you how strong i feel)

Pop ups- If anyone, ever, has bought anything from a pop up, I curse them unto the eighth generation.

What do these companies think! That I'm not only gonna welcome their constant intrusions but that I'm actually gonna think they are reputable and worth giving my credit card details to???!! Go away pop-ups. May everyone who has responded to a pop up be cursed to spending an eternity listening to Britney Spears songs.

All the proprietary crap. You need Flash, no you need Quicktime, no you need Real Media.... but only if you have Java, and only with DSL, becuase 52K isn't fast enough.... although you DOhave the right plug-in, the version you have is out of date, so click here, and download this PDF file, except it won't expand with Stuffit Expander, so you'll have to get 2 or 3 other expanders by clicking here. What is you baud rate? Becuase that will determine which of the expander programs you can download. But if you have a 1998 computer with Windows 2000, you can't access any page newer than a 2004 update anyway.

Look nerds- it won't be in color or stereo, but I can STILL see the CBS Extreme Games on a 1948 Dumont tv!

Right on MTP Jeff

I will go on record of saying that 90% of the people I have traded content with, spoke with, and had e-mail correspondence on the Internet have been really cool, and I have met true friends (Nontkl, for example) that I have corresponded with as if we grew up together. And this little rant Im about to expand on goes far and beyond the TMF, as this isnt the only place I frequently visit. However...

It is absolutely amazing too me how many bad asses and commandos live on the Internet. The cyberworld is instant courage for people who have no stroke or pull in their real lives and have no one to argue with. So they jump from screen name to messageboard (as if tracing an IP address is really that difficult) or keep multiple screennames on the same messageboard, picking fights and taking jabs at people for no unprovoked reason. Or they keep the same screenname everywhere, and just pick arguments, many of which they truly arent bright enough to discuss intelligently anyway.

Even better still are the neo-Nazi board admins and their "helpers" (none here at the TMF), who threaten to ban people for little to no reason...quick to give the so called permanent "IP address ban", when changing the IP address is just as easy as tracing it.

It is almost as if being online has become the equivelant of buying sports cars to make up for little dick syndrome. People use the Internet to be the person they wish they could be in real life, instead of just being themselves.

All these complaints about not knowing who you are talking to, duplicity, people coming off as jerks, etc. are not really about the Internet, they are about people. People have always been slimy little monsters from the deep. The Internet didn't cause this and it's not so much an Internet problem, it is a people problem. The Internet has made it quicker and easier for them to get at you, but blackmailing, macho tough guys, not REALLY knowing the person you think you know.... Haven't we all experienced this pre- 1996?

So what is your issue with the Internet, not the jerks who use it? Anonimity? Good point. But I hate all that proprietory stuff (See above. Yes, now!)

I feel you with some of the proprietary stuff you mentioned, although the Quicktime versus Real Media is easy to get around. Alot of what you are refering to is less proprietary as it is more the advancement of technology in of itself (plug ins do have relatively low shelf lives nowadays), and 56k modems have really stayed well past their prime; while web pages can be coded to support low end modems, unfortunately most web programmers do not do that anymore.

Good point about the people being the problem and not the Internet itself; a refreshing look at the situation.
