For those of you who believe in evolution................What will we look like 1 million years in the future? 2 million years in the future?? Have we stopped evolving or are we still at it??

Good question, but hard to say what we'll look like. Last I checked, I think human's wisdom teeth, appendix, tonsils, and coccyx are just part of the list of utterly useless human anatomy. I can see us getting rid of those in time (someone who specializes in medicine or biology feel free to correct me on this).

We also have chronic back problems because we're still relatively new to the whole "walking upright" thing, relatively speaking. I can see us correcting that, as well.

As far as other kind of sci-fi type stuff I think we'll defeat in time is the reliance on food/water as an energy source, and the need for sleep. I think we can clear out those from our lives, given an appropriate technology level 🙂 Mere speculation, naturally.

Maybe because of us polluting the planet so much we'll have SUPER immune systems

or maybe mother earth will get tired of all the polluting and wipe us all out. everyday something else becomes resistant to medication. new diseases pop up over time. shoot in a few million years plant life may be the dominant species...lol
but ummm err maybe they will be ticklish plants. 😀

Seeing as we'll be self evolving via biotech and perhaps nonotech over the next 100 years, odds are we'll look like and have the organs we want, whenever we want... A post human future awaits. Just a short ways off....

Myriads

Natural selection takes place in response to the environment. Humanity has been controlling our environment since we learned to farm . For the past 50 years or so, we've pretty much shaped the environment to fit our needs, at least in the more advanced countries. Humans haven't changed much in 10,000 years, maybe we've seen the end of human evolution.

I think Myriads is onto something, though. The next evolutionary step will be directly controlled by intelligent design. Maybe it will be genetic engineering, maybe nanotechnology. I won't live long enough to see it, but some of you will. Let's all hope it's done right.

You don't need to live long enough to see it. Buy a Cryo Contract and get suspended on death. We'll fix you and wake you up once we can.

It will be gentech first, then nano. The first targeted retroviruses for modifying DNA should be rocking by decades end. Then after they knock off the genetic problems, they will turn to stopping and reversing aging, and overall improvements will ride along.

Myriads

If the changes you mention come in my lifetime, OK. But I won't spend my children's inheritance to become a corpsicle.

Strelnikov

Hey everyone.

And of course, they say there'll be the disappearance of the 5th toe. Bad news for you and me -- it's typically the very most ticklish nibble on the body.

Boom

I personally don't like people messing around with too many genetic experiments. While much good can come of it,there are a very large number of problems that will occur if they are carried too far without foresight. And many times science has not been very good at looking at the future ramifications.

Strel, no need to spend your kids inheritance, a $150,000 suspension can befunded with a life insurance policy at the cost of less then $200 a year. That covers everything. Simple and easy.

Shark, I'm no great fan of genetic experimentation without forethought, but we'll see it as the cloning ban people are seeing despite their best efforts. If you ban it in nation A, then nation B will allow it.
Can't get a eye color change gen-patch in the US? Well a quick trip to Japan and a some $'s spent there will allow it... Can't upgrade your unborn in the womb in the UK? No problem, a fast trip to the City state of Goa and the right amount of gelt, and your kid is now going to be 6'3", blue eyes, and blond. And with the body of a god.
Want to have blue skin.... and so on. There will be nation states that allow it all. It will all be about revenue generation.

Hey Myriads, do you think it'll be possible to genetically engineer girls to be EVEN MORE ticklish in time?

evolution never stops. Perhaps humans as we are will disappear by self-destruction or by nature purging us like the virus we are (I love that MATRIX movie).
The key to evolution via humn intervention will rely on genetics, or more accurately, the ability to patch new genetic traits into existing organisms (Change your eye color NOW, increase your capacity to learn and retain information, increase the size of your... well you get it). The aging process will need to be reworked, that which causes our cells to stop reproducing will need to be altered. We will need to borrow the best genetic traits from other species, more powerful senses, regeneration (the KEY to curing nerve damage), upgraded immunity. Perhaps also the ability to render dentures obsolete by implanting synthetic tooth buds that allow regeneration of full adult teeth.
We will need to adapt filtration, better kidneys, better lungs. Build in a non-reaction to allergens, narcotics, etc.
Of course, the whole social system would need to be reworked to allow the humans who are now living longer and having a higher quality of life to not overpopulate the planet... selective fertilization perhaps?
The grander overall vision would be to have a collection of host organisms for your stream of consciousness (a-la Total Recall), one for each colonized planet, one that can deal natively with the environments (heat-cold-atmosphere-etc)... while we're at it, the ability to be amphibious would open up 7/10 of the earths surface to counter over-population.
1,000,000 years is a long time, the only thing I can be sure of is that I won't be around to see it😎

Am I to understand the we are able to genticaly alter our eye color RIGHT NOW?? Can someone shed some light on this?

No we cannot change eye color now. It's an example that many use as a cosmetic genetic change that will probably be popular and not too hard to institute.

As to the question about making people more ticklish, sure, it's a trait like any other. Probably doable.

Myriads

If you run a comics shop, Myriads, you've probably seen Warren Ellis's brilliant if darkly funny Transmetropolitan from DC/Vertigo. In this satirical future, new genetic traits can be purchased at the corner drugstore, apparently. Want to be a dolphin for a weekend? There's a genetic package for that. Get the Anti-Cancer gene and smoke all you want. I particularly like the "Phone Trait" which grows you an internal biotech cell phone organ. While Ellis is poking fun at society's pretensions, the sad part is, you're probably right and there will be a thriving market for such flippant personal modification. The same people who don't think anything of getting outrageous tattoos and piercings now will flock to get feline or reptillian body parts retrofitted to their genome.

Like most technology, I predict that it will really take off in the pornographic industries. Like some kind of insane "Bordello of Dr. Moreau," there will be "Furries" people who will pay to have sex with prostitutes genetically altered to look like anthropomorphic cats or rabbits or panda bears or whatever turns you on. And P.H. T. is dead on about using it to increase penis size. I predict that that modification will be terribly popular, despite the rash of deaths by morbid tumescence as several men have all the blood drained from their bodies by their first artificially enhanced erections. But hat's okay, as it's still evolution: Nature will weed out the terminally stupid.

The Phone Trait

Guy walks into a bar, sits down, orders a beer. He holds up his left hand, punches the back with his right index finger (like dialing a cell phone) then puts the hand up to his face like a phone and starts to talk.

Bartender comes over. "Hey you! This is a bad neighborhood, we have problems enough with low-lifes, we don't need wierdo's too."

Guy says, "You don't understand. This is the latest thing - implanted technology. I really do have a phone here."

Bartender says, "If that's true, call the phone I have in back of the bar." Guy goes thru the dialing routine, bar phone rings, bartender picks up, says "Well, I'll be go to hell. What next?"

Guy says, "There's lots of other implanted electronics - I sell the stuff. I'll tell you about it after I get back from the men's room."

Guy stays gone a long time. After 30 minutes, bartender goes into the men's room to see if the guy is OK. Finds the guy bent over the sink, pants down around his ankles, a roll of toilet paper shoved up his ass.

"Jesus, fella! Are you OK? Who did this to you?"

Guy says, "No problem - I'm just waiting for a fax."

Number 1000! Woo-hoo!

What if in the future all our minda became linked on a network like the borg?? 😱

Hi tech?

Bring it on!

Genetic engineering? Kewl! Nanotech? Hell ya. Direct brain-to-computer links? Plug me in! Ditto space-based mining and manufacturing - one ship to the asteroid belt with nukes can knock a nice 2mile long chunk of resources into Lunar orbit.

Put simply, the world is going to go one of two ways:

1) Endlessly diminishing resources and a "crash", as the poor areas of the world go completely to hell and eye the rich areas with suspicion and envy.

OR:

2) We damn well *make* new resources, to the point where basic material goods are essencially zero-cost, and we're ALL rich.

How we gonna get to #2? Hi tech, plus the sort of near-total personal freedom that fosters innovators like Alexander Graham Bell, Edison, Tesla and Einstein.

The weinies that fear option 2 talk about curtailing personal freedom and "hoarding limited resources". People like Al Gore - go read as much of his eco-freak book as you can stand, and learn why he wants government to treat "We The People" as children in a giant day care center.

Screw that. Take the damn brakes off! OK, so it'll get weird. Some idiots may grow giant dicks. Hell, some FEMALE idiots may grow giant dicks! Who cares?

Take your pick between flat-out weird, or huddling in the broken shells of the cities, starving and competing with packs of dogs for scraps.

Viva le WEIRD 😎.

If all of our minds become linked, kiss this forum goodbye..........

What about when all the other species of lifeforms catch up with us? I think it would be kinda neat to see walking dog-people, or some feline-like humanoids. I wanna see some mutants!

If you want to see mutants, then go and watch Millwall FC play soccer. Their entire supporters club it mutated.LMAO (Said by a true Manchester United Fan!)

Mutants you say...

From the simpons..i give you octoparrot

Thought i'd try to beat Ven to the punch. 😀

Theres no doubt in my mind science will play a part in whatever we become. The question is....how much can you tamper with the natural order of things until it backfires. For every advance there seems to be some side effect or a price to pay somewhere down the line. Like i said earlier who knows if we will even be here in a million years. Still it is fun to fantasize. 🙂
