Hi guys and gals!
I'm am avid gamer so I thought I'll start this topic (hope it hasn't been started before). I know there's a thread on arcade games, so mine's on computer/video games.
My favourites so far, in no particular order:
Wing Commander series - Arcade Space Sim
Outstanding story and involving game play. The conflict between the two warring factions is very well played out.
Starcraft - Real Time Strategy
Great story too, and the superb balance between three races with very different units was completely unprecedented.
Warcraft Series - Real Time Strategy
Like Starcraft, this was by Blizzard. Involving story and interesting units. As of warcraft 3, Blizzard did another superb job at balancing out the four faction's different units.
Diablo - Hack and Slash RPG
Also another Blizzard title. The nice part is how they made the story very unintrusive. If you're a story fan you can go through it carefully, but if you don't care about the story, you can ignore it and just get on with the game play. The only problem is that it gets old after sometime when you get too powerful; game play degenerates into a quest for better items, so that you can kill more monsters...to get better items. Blizzard did introduce patches to change certain mechanics though, so they kept it alive for sure.
The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind (Expansions: Tribunal and Bloodmoon) - RPG
This game blew me away on many fronts. First, the game is extremely non-linear, you can ignore the story and do almost anything you wish in the game. Be a good guy and save the world and be praised, or be an evil assassin and murder any NPC you see, it's entirely up to you. Moreover, the game uses a "plugins" system that allows fan made plugins to be easily integrated into your game, giving extra content and quest.
Homeworld series - Real Time Strategy
This has one of the most powerful and moving stories of any RTS I've ever played. I almost cried at the last mission at the events unfolding. This was also the first game to introduce true 3D RTS in space. Your ship units can move in any direction along the three axis, which makes for some interesting tactics.
The Sims Series - Simulation
Nothing like a virtual doll house to live an alternate life. I was instantly hooked the moment I played the first, and quickly grabbed the sequel when it was released.
X-Com Series - Squad Tactics/Base Management
Classic. Anyone who played it became zombified from lack of sleep.
Crusader Series - Action
Action game of the year during it's time. Played both installments and absolutely loved it. Interesting game mechanics and story.
EDIT:
Half Life Series - FPS
With one of the most unique ways to begin your mission (Black Mesa scientist) and the funkiest story and AI, what can go wrong with this brilliant game?
Unreal Tournament - FPS
My goodness, HOW can I forget this one?! I followed every release as if they were parts of my life support system. The action! The weapons! The MODS! I played this so much I'm making flak cannon sounds on my own.
Little Big Adventure Series (Relentless and Twinsen's Odyssey) - 3D Adventure
Another oldie, this one packs so much life into it I couldn't come to terms with myself when it was over. I wanted to leap into the screen and join the characters so lovable and adorable.
I might just add on to this when more comes to mind, but I'll leave it at this for now....it's YOUR TURN!
