What Happened to Common Sense in our Schools?

Two examples of what I think is text-book over zealous school administration:

High School Senior Suspended (narrowly avoids expulsion) for having a box cutter in his car (he's employed at a grocery store after school).

WTF? No wonder kids feel like criminals. 😕

For the first one, they should've used some more common sense in that one. I mean, sure I can see why they'd be all up in arms over this, but if he works at a grocery store and can prove it, they should've just asked him to put it where nobody could see it.

And as for the second one, being jailed over something like that? Give me a break!

the gist is: a student brought a gun to school with live ammos. The gun and ammos were confiscated before anything happened; but the incident was kept from parents and other students, because the principal decided that the student "posed no threat".

Now that's nuts!

im not surprised schools dont know how to handle most things. I remember back my senior year i was in english class and it was almost time to go home and the fire alarm goes off so everybody goes cause i mean it was an odd time to have a fire drill but w/e so we go out and then we try to go back in then they tell us that we cant just to get away from the school ... apparently someone phoned in a bomb threat the problem was the evac didnt happen until 1 55 they got the call at at 1 00 ..so they withheld that information for nearly an hour and when parents found out about it alot were pissed * including mine* because that was so irresponsible .... then again the principal at the time was an idiot

Schools hide behind regulations and whatnot to get rid of "trouble" kids. Maybe that's the case with the box cutter. Finally gave them an excuse to expell the kid.

Ummm, they NEVER teach this haha. I remember being on a hitlist in high school. A teacher found it and turned it into the principal. I didn't know about it until a parent of another student called my mother. The school never told us. I mean if my life is in danger and I need to watch out for someone, the really should tell you. Needless to say my mother was livid haha. We had something similar to the box cutter incident as well.

The issue lies in the fact that administrators of all High schools damn near nation wide have fell into a general state of paranoia. Due to the after shocks of the school shootings/bomb threats and so on, they're attempting to crack down on anything they view as a threat.

Is jailing them the right way to go about doing things? No.

Can you necessarily blame them? Not really.

A lot has changed as far as mental growth and even general interaction between teenagers. I mean shit, it's not really abnormal to see 10 or 11 year olds losing their virginity. My high-school is set in the suburbs of Rochester and encompasses as many fully armed police officers as the city high-schools, which those have had more issues with before. It doesn't matter.

You can't wear down jackets of any sort in classes there, they have to be loose, thin material. Amongst many, many other rules that have been newly established.

Yeah, both of those situations are shitty ones and the way they were handled was twice as pathetic. But, what can we say? Everyone's paranoid nowadays.
