What Is Everyones Definition Of A Sports "Blowout"

I thought I would start this thread to pose the question of what sports fans consider to be a "blowout" in respective sports. I'll start.

In baseball- I had a friend when I was younger whose opinion was that any game ending with a score of a difference of five runs or more was considered a baseball "Kick Ass" or "Blowout" His reasoning was that any game could be tied with one hit with men on base, but that if a team was ahead by five runs or more, even a Grand Slam Homerun could not tie the score. I tend to agree.

In the NBA- I would say that any game ending in a score of ten points or more difference, or even where a team is ahead by ten points or more during the game, in the second half, is a blowout. This may not always be the case in basketball, due to the fact that teams can make quick runs, but, for the most part, I would say this is true.

I dont pay attention to football as much, but, I would say that a game where one team is ahead by two more more touchdowns, and wins by two or more touchdowns, would be a blowout.

Hockey-Again, I'm not a big fan of Hockey, but, it would seem to me that any Hockey game with a four or five goal difference, would be a blowout.

Other opinions? Thanks.

I have seen a 5-run lead in a baseball game vanish in one half-inning many times, so I don't consider that to be a blow-out. (Most happy one was a game when the Dodgers trailed the Mets 10-5 after 7 innings at Shea Stadium with me present. The Dodgers scored 6 runs in the top of the 8th and went on to win it 12-10. 😀 😀 😀 )

To me, a baseball blow-out would have to be a margin of at least 9 or 10 runs.

Thanks for the reply, mils. Actually, I see your point. For myself, the largest lead any baseball team has overcome when I've personally been at a game is four runs. In September 1991, I was at a Mets-Braves game at Shea. The Mets scored four runs off Tom Glavine in the first, and then didnt get another run until the ninth. The Braves, in the meantime, proceeded to tie the score, went ahead in the ninth, and went on to a 7-5 win.

I was watching a Mets-Braves game on TV once when I lived up in NY, where the Braves had a 5-0 lead and blew it. The Mets first tied the game, and then won it in extra innings, by a 6-5 score.

Here are my default guidelines on the matter.

MLB: 8+ run differential.
NBA: 20+ point differential.
NFL: 21+ point differential.
NHL: 4+ goal differential.
Golf: 6+ stroke differential.
Tennis: Must win each set by at least 6-2, and win in straight sets.
Soccer: 4+ goal differential.
Horse Racing: 8+ length differential.

Thanks, bald. Wow, to me, even a game of five or six runs is usually a blowout. Eight runs would seem like :"Whatever team is down by that much, has REALLY had their asses kicked".

To me a blowout is when the game is over, before it's over. Like in the 3rd quarter of a football game or the 4th inning of a baseball game - though baseball is truly much more difficult, because a team could score 10 runs in the 9th, so it's not so much a run situation as it is who's playing. How many pitchers have been used, etc. A lot of times, games are blowouts, but the final score doesn't reflect it, because 2nd and 3rd stringers have competed and made the score "competitive".

I'd say in general it's a contest where one side has just failed/is unable to compete at the level of the other side. So no matter what they do, they will never be able to close the gap established by the winning side.

I am in agreement with most of that except I think a 17pt game in the NFL is pretty bad.
