Hi everyone, so in my career as an art student, i have taken my share of formal art classes and i would like to share some techniques that come straight from the masters!

This is going to be about gesture drawing. Gesture drawing, in it's most simplified description, is the process of quickly sketching out a figure to show movement, or just to get a framework for a more refined piece.

In my life drawing class, the model would pose for 20 seconds at a time, and in those 20 seconds we had to be able to just throw down a series of lines that represented the model. To do it we had to have our strokes very loose and quick.

Everything can be broken down into shapes, once you can see the shapes a structure makes up, then you can draw a framework of a figure, then refine it later on.

At home, the best way to practice is to have a friend come over, and draw them at first 3 minute increments, then 2, then 1, then 30 seconds. The more you do it, the more things you will pick up about the human structure which will then help you out in your future endeveours.

My process for developing a piece is to first gesture out a pose that i want to use. After i get that drawing down, I look in a mirror, or I call up one of my friends to help with the hard to see lines.

If all else fails, draw from life!

one thing to keep in mind in my guide here, is the transition from the getural sketch to the final drawing ready for tracing is a very long process. It is done with a new layer on top of the drawing and i keep drawing and redrawing the line till i looks just right.

also, start naked then add clothes on top, because i draw in photoshop i simply put a layer for clothing on top of the figure drawing. Reason to start naked is so you know all the joints are right where they need to be, this helps alot if you're drawing a figure with a dress.

Have fun everyone 🙂

Ah yes... Back at the art academy where I had my education in animation it was called "speedsketching". Indeed, we had about 30 seconds to complete a sketch. We had to pose for eachother.

Things got really wacky when our teacher asked us to bring some props... I of course brought my selfmade Celtic Warrior outfit complete with oversized warhammer... Ah, those were the days... 🙂

well you certainly would have been much more fun to draw than that naked old guy *shudders* XD

Good God... Naked old guys... You know, back at the art academy we had this one particular nude model in model drawing class, an older, wrinkled, bald guy, with just a patch of hair above his forehead, making him look like an aged version of Tintin. Terrible...still gives me the shudders... 🙁
Not that the female models were any better, most of them had barely enough stamina to maintain a pose other than lying on their back. But at least they were better than the old bald guy.

oh ewwww

i was fortunate, we only had 2 guys the entire semster in my life drawing class. Unfortunately though, two of the female models either didn't know how to hold a pose, or had really unflattering skin complexion transitions...
