any feedback in sight and information would be very very helpful

This is for me i'm wanting to really know 😀. So picture this thread as a ''Anime 101'' Thread for newbies like myself and others (that may be lurking and browsing this post).

ps. and when i say how can a person start getting into Anime. i mean like just Anime ingeneral like movies and series of it etc...

Well, the first step to anime is in realizing that it is no ordinary cartoon, and most fans refrain from calling these works of art mere "cartoons". In these instances, they feel this way because they have had the time to absorb it in and appriciate it.

The reason for this is because japanese animation, by it's very nature, is multi-themed, multi-classed, multi-genred and multifaceted. There is anime for intellectuals and children alike.

The anime industry has just as many genres as the movie industry does. You name it, anime has it.

I think though that in order to begin to like anime you have to understand it. And for an american, such as myself, it requires that you look at it from more than one point of view. Remember, anime was not made for you or for me, it was made for the japanese people and so is often tailored to them and their culture. Albeit, anime is more universal today than it was since it's humble beginnings. So remember at first that it may be difficult to adjust to what you might normally be used to. It can be much more deep and uninteresting at first, but if you stick with a series it will usually grow on you in some way.

Anime resolves heavily around plots, stories, and characters much like a movie would. These characters are often well thought out in advance and take a life of their own. One of the magical things about anime characters is they are so easily identifiable with pretty much anyone of any mentality. So characters are, more often than not, memorable and easily become fan favorites.

Anime is also about the music. Alot of anime has some wonderful BGM or soundtrack additions. The genred music in anime is just as diverse as anything else can be. Theres rock, pop, metal, techno, jazz, blues, and even classical, and more. Music is very important in anime and is a great addition to the telling of a story or the mood of a situation, or the sort of theme or demographic the series is playing to.

And lets not forget the artwork itself. It is of a level and quality that easily surpasses even some of the best western styles. Just looking at some of the artwork is very inspiring and realistic and plays just as much to your soul and mood as it does the story.

These are just some of the many things that make anime so great, better than regular cartoons.

Now, to actually get into anime, I'd suggest making friends, online and off, that you know are into anime. Anime fans are usually refered to as "otakus", meaning "anime fan". There are thousands of webforums dedicated to anime in general and specific anime series as well.

To get the best experience possible from it however, and the most knowledge, its probably best to actually go to a library or bookstore and look for reference material. I know for a fact that there are books that basically tell you about the history of anime itself and how that got started and where its going.

Most bookstores will also sell "manga". If you don't know what this is, its the japanese equivilent to comic books. There are plenty of online sites you can purchase manga and anime from as well. My all time favorite is Robert's Anime Corner Store, I've been doing business with them for over 4 years, and its just excellent service, excellent selection and excellent prices. They also sell misc. things as well and apparel.

If you're looking into watching an anime series I really couldn't recommend a good one unless I knew what you would like. I don't want to stereotype or assume, but it looks to me like you have a liking for gothic, vampiric, etc. sort of things. In that case, theres plenty anime and manga to wet your appetite with.

Vampire Hunter D is an interesting short film. I personally think it's overrated, but its a good start looking into this genre.

Witch Hunter Robin is a very good one that was only fully released recently, and it is available in a complete dvd boxset.

Theres plenty of others, and you could search them by genre at your own leisure.

I'm not sure what else to say at this point. Normally I'd have all the answers and it would have been presented in a better way, but this thread caught be off guard.

Feel free to ask questions. I'm sure someone will have the answers for you. ^___^

Everything that Celtic said was right on the button. Anime grows on you. For me it didn't take long lol. My first real encounter with anime was Sailor Moon. I had rented two of the OVA's to watch at home simply out of curiosity and was hooked instantly. After that i started watching the Sailor Moon series (which at the time was airing on Cartoon Networks "Toonami" segment). However, Sailor Moon was all I would watch. Until one day after missing an episode of SM I was a bit bummed out so I watched an episode of Dragonball Z out of boredom.

At first I loathed DBZ to the core. It didn't really seem to have anything behind it and was just the same thing over and over. But after awhile it grew on me and I now have more than half of the VHS Collection of DBZ, and all of the Dragonball GT DVD's, and the movies.

....obsessed? Me?

However, I don't think i would have grown to love it (As well as other series i now possess) if i hadn't talked with some anime fans i knew in my home town.

Whatever you do to get started on Anime, just be patient with it. Try a couple of different genre's if you like. You'll find something that catches your fancy, and usually very quickly.

If your really serious about it, I recommend walking into a Suncoast or Sam Goody and scoping out their anime section. The prices are a bit high but they have a HUGE variety, and even sell Manga's.

Well that's enough out of me. I'm not used to writing posts this long. Anyway, I hope i've given you some useful info to help you on the road to anime. ^^ Good luck....your in the otaku's realm now :evilha:

Thanks for all your advice and helpful tips and suggestions Anime316 and Celtic_Emperor

what would be a good Anime forum to join (kinda one thats like the TMF with alot of members)?

Normally I would have had just the place. And I was a moderator there, but the owner closed the site down because he didn't have the funds to keep it running.

But its really hard to give you a specific one as there are more fan sites then there are "general" anime sites. I really don't go to these forums myself, since theres little I could learn from them. Like most otakus after a point, we know what we like and so won't bother with the rest unless theres something interesting about it. So I'd imagine alot of sites go ignored or are already dead if not enough people like them.

well ain't that the pits then

Hmmm i will look around though still then. Just to see whats out there anyways. That Vampire D Hunter which i have heard of before mentioned many times sounds interesting i haven't seen it yet though. And also just by the name along the Witch Hunter Robin sounds good as well. I will see about checking both of theses out 😀

ps. and yeah your right the genre of Anime i would proble be most into would be the gothic/vamperism/horror type of genre. you guessed right Celtic

Just try web searches, and you'll probably come upon random webforums build just like this one and other programs like PHP, and the one TickleTheater uses.

As for websites, well, theres no way you can't find any. But the thing is just putting in "anime" and then waiting for results isn't good enough, most of it will probably be crap, so you have almost know what you're looking for before you try.

As for you liking what you like, it wasn't a dead give away at all. 😉

Licenced and non-Licenced

I'd like to bring up a little tid-bit for ya if I could. Everything in the thread so far hits the nail on the head but one thing that hasn't been mentioned are the two types of anime product.

Licenced products and series are anime tv-shows, original video animations (OVA's), and movies that have been brought over to the US and translated for American audiences. Things like Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Dragon Ball Z to name a few. Basically anything you can walk into a Walmart or Suncoast and buy is Licenced. To download any licenced anime is very illegal and not condoned by me or anyone else with a good sence of justice and honor. There are very very few to no exceptions to this. So just don't go that route. 😛

Non-licenced anime on the other hand is anime that has not yet been brought to the US. There are a lot of very good animes out there that aren't now and will never be comming to US shores. So groups of talented bi-lingual individuals will create something called a fansub. It's a fan-subtitled episode of an anime series or movie. These can range from anime years old to the most recent episode that just aired on Japanese TV yesterday. It is not illegal to download non-licenced anime though it is considered good edicate to delete it after you watch it. And stop distrobution immedatly if and when the product is licenced. A good place to find this kind of anime is here:

http://www.animesuki.com

Using bittorrent you can enjoy many of the same anime Japanese audiences enjoy today. Though it is all in japanese with english subtitles. If you look through the series list and see something that sounds interesting google it and maybe check it out. But I must insist that at the very least you look into a series called Naruto. It's the most popular anime in Japan right now. And I rush to download and watch the new episode every Wednesday night. 😛 If you have any questions don't hesitate to post or pm me. 🙂

A tip- Never buy your anime from Suncoast if you can help it. Their prices are ridiculously inflated and you can find what you want and more of what you want elsewhere.

Also, it smells wierd, sort of like crap in some of those Suncoast stores and it makes you lightheaded. So take that into consideration as well.

let me tell u this, anime is not like Totally Spies, anime is cool and has a story, totally spies doesn't so my advice?

WATCH NARUTO OF FULL METAL ALCHEMIST AND STAY OF FOX KIDS (or something u guys have in america 😛)

Another tip-

If you're going to invest into a series, buy the boxsets if the series is available complete like that in a boxset.

Trust me, I've done the math. You actually pay LESS by buying all of it at once via the boxset, AND you get a cool collector's box to hold the discs in.

You actually pay MORE by buying it volume for volume even though it seems more affordable that way. This is because of a combination of taxes and such.

Yet another tip-

Buy your anime online. Its my experience that anime and anime merchandize is cheaper online than offline at a store. I know the temptation to buy an anime, even if it is in a boxset, is great if its right there in front of you and you have the money. But just remember what I said- its cheaper online, and its the exact same thing, and may even come in a special edition box or come with extras online as part of the package.

Sometimes though, there are exceptions where a store will offer a series at a reduced price, brand new, etc. Its what happened with my when I bought Cowboy Bebop. It was the entire series, the boxset, except it was packaged differently in the box was made different, but the box's picture was the same and instead of 6 or 7 discs this one has 3, but everything is there, all the episodes and there are even some extras on this edition.

Get a look at this. When the "Cowboy Bebop Perfect Sessions DVD Boxset" came out it cost roughly $200.00 no matter where you bought it, except for maybe some online stores.

Thats ridiculous.

Guess how much I paid for mine? Only $45.00

And the only real difference were the differences in the bonus material, the number of discs, the make of the box itself, and mine didn't come with the volume 1 soundtrack and my box wasn't "a limited edition sequentially numbered" box! Big deal! 😛

Amasing!

Although, it is true that the more material there is on a single disc that quality of the video stream is slightly dimimished, but who cares, and I didn't notice a difference, and I'm pretty damn meticulous about that sort of thing!

$45.00 compared to $200.00! Thats a $150 dollar savings! And with that money, thats enough to buy another COMPLETE anime series in a boxset online, with money to spare!

Hot damn that was a sweet deal! 😀

i'm getting anime over loaded here😛

Thanks once again Celtic_Emperor (you seem to know awhole whole lot about Anime on this forum) and also Thank you as well Kjiron to. Both of you guys have been a great deal of help 😀

Would it be better for me to go out and buy a Anime based magazine? and if so what Anime magazines are popular/or that would be best for me to start out with?

or

Should i just stick to online Anime forums on the internet first before jumping into buying a Anime magazine?

You are very welcome. 🙂 I do appoligize if I went a little overboard. Hehe, guess I'm excited for you about the adventure you're starting out on. It makes me think back to when I first began to enjoy anime.

If you want to pick up an anime-mag that'd be a good idea and a nice place to start. I sugest Anime Nation and Shonen-Jump. The latter is more of a collection of manga episodes than an actual magazine but it's still good stuff.

Also, maybe stop in your local video rental stores like Blockbuster and Hollywood video. Ask a worker if they have an anime section and browse through it. Rent before you buy is never a bad idea.

Thanks once again Kjiron. I think i'm gonna take your suggestion and pick up the newest issue of Anime Nation. And as well i might join the AnimeNations website forum too. Just to get comfortable with the whole setting.

Feel free to give out any pointers or tips as well that you might see fit.

First let me just say that none of this post is aimed at anyone, and it's just a general 'my point of view' type thing. 😀

I hate to be the one to disagree, since I agree with everything else you said -- but 'anime' as we call it and cartoons really are the same thing. The word anime itself is short for the word animation (more specifically, 'animeshion'. As far as people in Japan are concerned, 'anime' is just their word for 'cartoons'. Heck, give Japan Bugs Bunny and they'd say it's anime, if you see what I mean.

It's the same conversation with people who talk about Totally Spies, and say things like "it's just a cartoon trying to copy anime style." That's like saying it's a cartoon that's like other cartoons. On top of that, there's no such thing as 'anime style' as I've heard people call it, because there's no set style -- you can't say Akira and Crayon Shin-Chan look anything alike. Heck, Akira doesn't even things like giant sweatdrops.

Of course, this isn't totally true, because of use of the actual word 'anime' has become...confusing. Personally, I try to say 'Japanese Anime' to be as specific as possible, but most western people just assume that anime is refering to Japanese cartoons.

I've gone off on a tangent here. My point is that anime (aka Japanese Animation) and cartoons (aka all other Animation(?)) are basically the same thing, just from different countries. Besides, there are plenty of western cartoons (especially in comic form) that can be just as multi-themed as Japanese ones -- some moreso in fact (not all 'anime' are gems 😉 ).

The best tip I can think of is the magazine 'Newtype'. It's great for keeping up to date with what's going on in the anime world, in both the USA and Japan. Even though I don't live in either the USA or Japan, it's still good. ^^x

Interesting 😀

Thanks for your point of view Battousai. I will check out that Newtype magazine as well. I'm thinking about joining a Anime forum i just have not gotten around to it yet.😛 But i will soon here later on today trust me.

So then whats Manga? Japan Comic Books?

I know that cartoons and anime are the same thing Batt, I'm not stupid. Of course I know they are fundamentally the same thing, but the genre and level of commitment are completely different. And that goes for the actual creation of it as well as it's consumption by the fans.

Anything animated is a cartoon. What I was saying was that anime is not a mere cartoon because symbolically and by the effort that goes into it, and in other ways, its much more than what one would expect from a regular cartoon. Anime consistantly and thoroughly raises the bar, and thats what makes it different from regular western style cartoons.

Sorry, I really didn't mean to offend, and I certainly know you're not stupid. 😱

I do love anime, that's obvious. All the different genres, titles aimed at different age groups, the great stories -- I don't deny any of it. But at the same time there are western cartoons/comics that are just as good (better, in some cases) than anime/manga titles.

Animated movies such as Watership Down, The Secret of NIHM, An American Tail, The Land Before Time. In my opinion, these classics rival some of the best anime I've seen, and I'll never dismiss them as 'mere cartoons'.

In short, all I'm saying is that not all anime titles are gems. There are some truely bad ones which I've seen in my time. Of course, nothing I've quite seen will ever be as bad as Cow and Chicken. 🙄

(If anything above offends anyone in any way, just slap me. It's 2 AM, I shouldn't be trying to think.)

BlackmoonDoll said:

Yep. The word manga means comic in English. What a lot of people don't realize though, is that it also means cartoon. Anyway, manga is generally used to describe comics originating from Japan.

You're welcome. And in saying that you've proven that different people have different opinions. I'm not trying to push my views on other people, I'm just making them known. 😛

I also did not imply that anime cannot suck. I myself have seen some anime thats even crappier than regular cartoons, and thats saying alot. LOL

I have been following this thread, because I too have been getting into Anime. Now, I'm not completely new to it like BlackMoonDoll, but i am far from an expert. I have seen a few movies, things that pretty much everyone into Anime has already seen (Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Perfect Blue, etc.) However, I really need more information so I can find out the best places to read reviews and actually get more DVDs. I don't want to make a similar mistake to this one: I bought a Fushigi-Yugi OVA set, and started to watch it. I had thought it looked interesting, so i was pretty excited about it. however, I soon realized I had no idea what was going on, because it takes place after a series that I had never seen, and continued the story. Well, I watched the entire thing because I had spent a lot of money on it, and after I figured out who was who and what was going on, I did enjoy it. But I am sure I would have loved it if I had seen the original series first. If i was better informed, i would have known that. The problem is, as stated above, just typing in "anime" into a google search is not really the way to go, as a lot of crap comes up. So this thread has been helpful. Anime is something I've always had a passing interest in, but i've really enjoyed most of what I have seen, so i want to get more into it now. (I'm currently watching Metropolis, which i'm enjoying quite a bit. the animation is outstanding, the story is entertaining, and it has a great jazz soundtrack.) As far as Vampire hunter D, I have seen it, and i agree it is pretty good, if over-rated. However, have any of you seen Vampire hunter D: Bloodlust? I heard it was better than the original (which i did enjoy, if not as much as I thought I would.) I would love to have a recommendation from somebody who has seen it, and can say how it compares to the original. Also, what about the movie Blood: the Last Vampire? Or the series Hellsing? I have been interested in both, and would love some feedback if any of you have seen them. Sorry to ask for so many opinions, but Anime seems to be a great world to get into, so i'm looking foward to getting deeper into it. Also, here's an idea for newbies like BlackMoonDoll and myself: Can some of you post either some of your favorite movies/series with a short description, or just a short list of the seminal works that beginners should check out (things like Akira, that reach a wide range of fans.) Thanks for all the info guys!

BlackMoonDoll, I picked up the new issue of "Newtype" magazine today, and it has the results of a reader poll on the 25 best Anime of all time. Pretty cool reading, if you haven't picked it up yet, i'd recommend it. I found it helpful in deciding where I should head to next, maybe you will to.
