As a visually-oriented person, I tend to put perhaps too much weight on what others have chosen for their avatars. Yeah, me with the fu-fu owl picture saying that...
I'm always impressed by people like Isabeau and AdamN and nerrad who use actual pictures of themselves as their avatars. Other times, just the choice or subject matter have a nice hook. For some weird reason, TheInnerJamie's always reminds me of a wide mouth with teeth(!). I forget the owner, but I love that one with the woman's heel with a spider below it. i could go on about other favorites, but this isn't the thread for it. It may or may not amuse you to know that to this day I envision you as your big-eyed blond boy avatar, FT Genikit, despite knowing you appear quite different than that in real life!
