Where does upstate begin for you

Its funny. I recently heard a local GEICO® commercial on the radio saying New Yorkers have different ideas where upstate NY begins,which also has been a local cotroversary for ions. Not to discourage people in NYC,but I always figured it starts around or just below the Albany area and up from there. Any input?

I say it begins at Yonkers.

A friend of mine who lives in Greenwich Village says that upstate begins at Columbus Circle.

(Columbus Circle is at 59th Street and 8th Avenue in Manhattan, for the benefit of those of you from elsewhere.)

When I would visit my cousins 45 minutes to an hour away from Albany I would always consider myself to be going upstate. So to me that is what I consider upstate New York.

Once you leave the five boroughs, you're upstate! (I live a few hours northwest of NYC).

From Queens, "Upstate" could be anywhere from Westchester northward. My dad used to have a client near Poughkeepsie, and when he went there, would refer to it as going "Upstate".

For me, I consider really "Upstate" to be from Albany northward.

Anything north of Westchester county. Albany is pretty far north.
