Why do we have to refer to it as 'coming out of the closet?'

It's something I've wondered for awhile. Why do we refer to revealing our sexual preference as coming out of the closet? Personally, I think it's because there are so many homophobic people in this world that those who are gay/lesbian/bisexual feel alienated and try to keep it a secret since they don't want to be harassed or anything like that.

The truth be told, I personally think it's because there are so many people who are afraid of homosexuality (hence the term, homophobe) or believe that homosexuality is evil. I personally feel there's nothing wrong with it whatsoever; In fact, my mother even told me that there was a case of homosexuality in the Bible. I don't know this for a fact, but I am willing to believe it.

But at any rate, I think it's time I got to the point of this message. Yes, I, too, am coming out of the closet, since I know you will accept me.

I am officially bisexual.

I feel no shame nor personal guilt for this, I am proud for who I am.

As per the above line of questioning; I'm not exactly sure. It's been like that forever, I guess. Perhaps it holds some connotation to 'hiding' or 'burying' something away and finally pulling it out and into the light.

Congrats on coming out. I think there's just a lot of closed-minded people in the world who only see things their way. Everybody has their own interests and I think it's ignorant for people to act like just because a guy and a guy or a girl and a girl can't produce babies means that it's wrong and that they're going to hell. I would say that people are starting to become more open-minded, though, or at least more open-minded than they have been in the past, and that in time it won't really be a big deal at all.

Gratz on coming out. There is still a lot of prejudice in the world towards those of differing sexualities, but with more people "out of the closet", perhaps peoples minds will be changed, slowly but surely.

I could be wrong, but i believe the closet reference might be in regards to the old saying about "Skeletons in the closet", which is a term that means buried secrets. So, coming out of the closet is reference to taking a skeleton out of the closet, basically letting secrets out.

I could be totally wrong about that though.

As far as you coming out, I wish you the best of luck with that and hope the people around you can accept that.

Edit: Of course, after reading the Wikipedia article, i admit i might have been mistaken. I still like my idea though 😛

I believe your right, terms like that are used in fear and misunderstanding. Anything that's not the norm must be given little phrases, that make it different.

Good for you, be who you are and be proud of who you are. Good people are a good people and vice versa. No matter race, religion, sexuality or anything else that makes them who they are.

On a related note why do people say something is ''going to the dogs" as if dogs are bad or ''monkey buisness" to suggest monkeys are dishonest. I won't stand by while are animal friends are discriminated against. And yes there was homosexuality in the bible the city of Sodom which God destroyed, bad example, a more possitive homosexual reference would be the magicions with the cool tigers, I like those guys.

It's referred to as "coming out of the closet" because that phrase has connotations of revealing something that has previously been hidden. It could probably be replaced with something like "coming out from behind the curtain" or "de-cloaking", however those phrases are both smelly and therefore "coming out of the closet" remains preferable. It's not because the whole world hates homosexuals; some people do, but nowadays people largely couldn't give a flying fuck what you or any other consenting adult does on their own time.

As an aside, I remember reading somewhere that bisexuality doesn't exist in the sense that we recognise it; that is, rather than a sexual compulsion as is the case with homosexuality (sexual attraction and desire for persons of the same sex) or heterosexuality (the opposite), bisexuality is instead a manifestation of curiosity and confusion regarding one's sexuality, or possibly some sort of rampant libido gone wrong. That's a theory to which I subscribe. Until the day I see a man exacting the same sort of visceral pleasure from back-scuttling another man as he does from porking a female, or finding lasting love in a same-sex relationship, I will continue to believe that it's just an excuse to be a bit edgy and/or shag anything that moves.
