A New York woman has started a campaign to try to prevent the inaugural "Aggressive Music Festival" -- a two-day concert to be headlined by Slipknot -- from taking place as scheduled July 17-18 in Glens Falls, N.Y. Susan Balfour, who has collected more than 300 signatures protesting the show, objects to the lyrics of the bands that are set to play at the event ans say young children shouldn't be allowed to go. As I see it, if the parents bought the tickets, then theyve decided to let THEIR children attend, and probably dont need nor want a good two sho christian woman telling them that certain events are inappropriate for their children.

I agree... although Slipknot sucks

Im not a Slipknot fan either, I just take offense when people shove their views/opinions/beliefs onto other people

This is happening in my hometown and I am truly disappointed in the small-minded censorship mentality of my neighbors! If the music offends you, don't buy a ticket. If you don't want your kids to go, be a parent and don't let them.

should you know the woman who started the petition, do me a favor and knock her on her ass. eh

So it's ok to protest the war in Iraq, but not a concert?

If enough people want it then they too can get a petition together, no?

Just curious ramblings......😉

I'm starting a petition here in my own state to stop the performance of a Peter, Paul, and Mary concert. I have children, damn it, and I WILL NOT let them be exposed to such raunchy, drug-addeled garbage!!

SIGN ME UP, Drew!!!!!😀 😀 😀 😛

(does Ann know about the kids????)

It'll never happen

I'm sure this woman has some small time journalist friend, and that's the only reason it got any press.

That, or the media was looking for a humorous story; some uptight moral women they could poke fun of.

Personally, I feel protesting to be a retarded concept altogether. That said, and with all due respect, there is a HUGE difference between the two cases.

War in Iraq: The whole country is involved and will be influenced by, among other things, the cost of the war and possible future attacks resulting from the war.

Concert: The protester is attempting to infringe on the freedom of other human beings based on her personal feelings and opinions. As stated by Lime, if other people want to go to the concert, and if people allow their children to go, it's none of her damn business.

As stated by sincerity, there's no way her attempts will be successful.

I totally agree with what you said Mav except that it is still her "right" to protest and petition against whatever she would like even if it doesnt effect the whole country... as it is our right to ignore her or present the other side. The fact that it is silly doesnt mean she cant do it....😉

Absolutely correct. I wasn't suggesting that she shouldn't be allowed to do it. I'm just calling her an asshole for doing it. (Exercising my own rights lol. Yeah, I know. Profanity isn't covered by the first amendment. I personally feel that should be changed...but I digress.)

maverick, if youre still around log onto AIM

as for the war and concert things, I dont think a concert will kill anyone

Come to think of it...she's exercising her rights in an attempt to prevent others from exercising theirs. Ah, the irony...

My only question here is how close is she to the venue? If it's going to be a loud concert practicly in her backyard, then she's got even more right to complain and try to get it moved or stopped. It's her choice. It always amazes me that the same people who cry the loudest about not taking away their rights are the first to complain when someone they disagree with exercises their rights. The quote (paraphrased) "I may totally disagree with what a man has to say. But, I'll defend to the death his right to say it." comes to mind here. Let the people have their say. Those in authority will simply have to decide who's got the more valid points.

Hell, we have a neighbor across the street who blares rap throughout the neighborhood nearly every day. He plays it so loud that I can't have the windows open and still hear the television in my own house. And we're three doors down from him. I wish we could do something to not have to listen to that, either. I'd want it toned down even if it was music I enjoyed. But, stuff like that, encouraging rape and using all the foul language, doesn't go well in a neighborhood full of little kids. (And before those who enjoy rap complain, I DO like the musical style of rap. I just don't like some of what falls under the title rap. I personally differentiate by refering to the gang bang mentality stuff as crap rap. That's what I'm refering to here.) He can listen to whatever he wants in his own home. My point is that the entire neighborhood shouldn't have to hear it.

Oddly enough, this is one of those cases where her protest of the concert will give it more publicity than the promoters could've ever dreamt of.

That's not the point, Lime...someone shouldnt be "knocked on her ass" for expressing her point of view and excercising her right to petition...If we should do that to her, then we should do that to anyone who protests anything....cant be inconsistant...

i protest the little red sox in Ray's full moon attachment.

how dare you Ray.

and now for something completely different........

The concert is scheduled to be held in the Civic Center, home to a semi-pro hockey team, a semi-pro basketball team and a short-lived arena football team. The accustics are so bad, it's sometimes hard to hear the music inside, let alone outside. The center is located in the middle of the downtown commercial district, with neighbors like Domino's Pizza, Burger King, a plumbing wholesaler and a brewpub. Other acts like Blue Oyster Cult, Foghat, Foreigner and even the Greatful Dead (okay, I'm showing my age here) have not caused an uproar like this. As Dr. Bill Kobb said, she is doing more to promote the concert than anything. I never pay attention to who might be appearing there and I live 5 miles away. The only reason I know anything about this one is because of the protest. Someone in the box office told me ticket inquires are way up since the story broke.

I protest the Baron's waste of a good Monty python quote!😉 😛 😛

Tieler, the point is that you DO have the right in this country to protest it. It doesnt mean that enough people will protest to have it actually shut down. Most people will think she is an idiot and many will go to the concert just because she opened her mouth. (as the good DR. pointed out)

You cant give some the right to protest and others not. It doesnt work that way. The Draft card burnings and Vietnam protests in my younger years did a LOT to hurt our soldiers serving. Ask any Vietnam vet what it felt like when they came home to boos and cries of "baby killer"

Doesnt mean they shouldnt have had the right to protest. That's what we Americans believe in. ( at least most Americans do)

LOL

You know, this stuff reminds me of this concert I was at last year, there were some kickass blackmetalbands there, and in front of the entrance there was this woman (aged about 50) standing silently with a cross, kinda like stating: "be gone, EVIL!"

I was wearing a t-shirt with a big pentagram on it that day so we made a couple of pictures of me standing next to her 😀
