ORANGE CITY, Fla. - A mob of shoppers rushing for a sale on DVD players trampled the first woman in line and knocked her unconscious as they scrambled for the shelves at a Wal-Mart Supercenter.

Patricia VanLester had her eye on a $29 DVD player, but when the siren blared at 6 a.m. Friday announcing the start to the post-Thanksgiving sale, the 41-year-old was knocked to the ground by the frenzy of shoppers behind her.

ah. deck the halls! the christmas spirit is a wonderful thing isn't it?

I saw an article that said they offered to put the DVD player on hold for her, if I were them, Id just give it to her, cuz you know, shes probably going to sue them

Makes me glad I got my nieces and nephews shopping done early I really did not feel like going to the toy stores on Friday I do hope wal-mart does give her a free DVD player I am not sure if she would have a case against the store for the other peoples stupidity

This is why I like shopping on the internet. I tend to feel tired if I have to go outside of my front gate these days. 🙄

It sounds like they were decking more than the halls! THIS is why I don't go near any of these places on black Friday...or any day of the first weekend of the shopping season...or during the season itself unless I can sneak in during the day when most of the nutcases are at work. People aren't satisfied with trying to run you off the road on the way to the stores anymore. They also try to kill you inside the stores. I've actually seen fist fights between customers who wanted the last of something. I didn't think the season of giving was meant to include giving someone a black eye!

Frankly, the entire commercial aspect of things disgusts me. There've been decorations up for weeks. I can understand having some up now to "get people in the mood" or whatever. But, half the places around here started as soon as the halloween sales were done. As for the shopping, it's just too crazy. I have a hard enough time most days just getting to the mall and grabbing what I need. I can't be getting pushed and shoved by rude people who don't care if they hurt someone. I sneak in during quiet times, get what I need, get out and get on with my day.

To me, it's not about all the craziness and having to get that specific thing or outdo someone else. It's about enjoying the company of family and friends and the love we share....no matter which holiday/holy day we happen to observe.

Ann...stepping off soapbox

So she got trampled at Wal-Mart for FREE?

To think, some web-sites charge a lot of money for that! :blaugh:

Low, low prices! So low, that when the trampling masses mow you down, and your face lies in the dirt, you still won't be able to see them.

What a surprise. It was bound to happen sooner or later.

To all our friends on the TMF:

Happy Easter!

So what are everyone's plans for Labor Day?

I'm making a point here....do we really need Christmas (a wonderful holiday, by the way, celebrating the greatest birthday of all time!)
jammed down our throats weeks before Halloween?
A free dvd player? That poor woman who got trampled deserves a hell of a lot more compensation than that from the those a-hole, money-grubbing, early-bird shoppers! :ranty: :Grrr:

In all fairness to the big W...it isnt their fault. I work in a mall and saw a sight on Friday that I have never before seen in all of my years in retail.

The mall opened at 6 am and Kbee toys opened for their early bird sale...I literally saw 150 people RUNNING down the halls of the mall to get there first to save what amounted to 10 % in savings. One lady that came by my store was using a cane and still trying to break into a trot.

Put the blame on the idiots that will do anything to save a buck and be the first to get that dvd player or toy or other piece of crap that they just have to have or Christmas will be RUINED.

*note that I got the 3 toys that my son wanted today in that same toy store for the same price as the sale was a 2 day sale and I didnt even have to wait in line*

If the lady was trampled it is because she put herself in danger by being out with the fools that come out to these "special sales"

If no one showed up for them, the retailers would start opening up at normal hours again to save payroll and cut expenses and everyone would be happy.

So who is to blame? You do the math.... 🙄

You think your Wal-Mart is bad? Try going to one infested with hordes of French-Canadians. For a group who professes to loathe Americans, you can't flush a toilet without getting four of them wet during shopping seasons. You wouldn't catch me dead anywhere near a shopping center during this week, but it's the same every holiday. What kills me are all of the handicapped spots filled with cars bearing Quebec plates. Even trying to buy something, they refuse to speak English and will actually push the natives aside physically if they want something. Add that to the mad holiday rush, and you've got a death-trap waiting to happen. Oh, and this one is in the process of remodelling (so we can bring you a bigger and better corporate empire), so all the traffic is funelled down narrow aisles.

My Christmas consists of a day of reflection, thankfulness and maybe a few friends and family over. Everybody who knows me knows that they don't have to shop for me, and they won't expect a hell of a lot from me...I just don't do the Corporate Commercial Christmas thing. Not my style.

Well said, Dave!

As I stated, I'm all for Christmas....I enjoy those drive-thru light shows some cities like Hartford have, but I prefer to remember the real meaning of Christmas without having a darn sale shoved down my throat every 10 minutes. And this season certainly isn't about trampling someone and hurting them......all for a stupid dvd player.

LOL!!

Think she'll get an invoice in the mail from Wal-Mart in the coming week?

Amateur trampling Qty 1 $90.00
Payable upon receipt
Thank you for patronizing Wal-Mart

Now there is a political point that I could make here, but I really can't be arsed. 😀

Cheers.

Knowing Wal-Mart, very probably. (Hang on, I don't know Wal-Mart! I'm English for smeg's sake! Crap.......)

Gee, I remember right after 9/11 how people were actually taking the time to be kind to one another, that really didn't last long. Christmas, Hannukah and all the holidays have become so commercial its crazy. I get most of my shopping done early and some over the internet. I love to shop and I love to get a great bargain but not at this expense. I will not go to a store during black friday and I do try to stay away from the hoards.

At my sons karate school they are trying to teach kids to be kind, not just kind to family or friends but rather "random acts of kindness". They get a journal once a year that they must fill out, they actually need to fill this as part of their promotion requirements, as well as good report cards and learning their forms. Teaching kids to be good citizens and respect. Not the crap you see at the Walmarts of this world.

Random Acts of Kindness....now thats a nice thought for the holiday season!

*Sigh* I work at a Wal Mart in Florida (Thankfully only in the produce department), and I can tells ya that something like this happening don't surprise me one bit. The humans are so eager to know they got something for less than they would have to pay for it otherwise, that it borders on insanity. On ordinary days, one will be in the store, and things will be going just fine and dandy, and they'll still run up to the customer service desk and squeal aboot something and end up getting something free, or at a reduced rate. I was lucky enough to not have to come in until 1 P.M. on Friday, and as I said, I work in the grocery area, but I heard talk aboot fistfights earlier in the day. It's almost enough to make you cry.....

If it weren't so darn funny! Heh heh!

And then when they've finished shopping for their electronic crap Alex, they come up to you and politely ask for a bay-ug to carry it home in. 😉

I used to work for Wal-Mart and I see what goes on during one of their "blitz" sales. What happens, happens. I'm sorry. The most she can do is try to remember who trampled her over and get them. Wal-Mart cannot be held liable for customer's actions. I've seen it tried, and people have failed. The DVD is about all they can get from Wal-Mart, if they're lucky. She also knew the risks of sales like this and the way people rush to get them. If you don't want to be trampled, then don't go in the front. It's that simple. Can't make it any plainer

🙁

The holiday of Christmas has been long bastardized, and it does make me sick...

Kids brought up to open a card, ignore the card, and see if there's any cash and/or check inside.:sowrong:

My kids tried pulling that garbage one year: my mother had sent them cards for Christmas, and they opened them, and as expected, no money....they threw the cards aside and remarked something to the line of "Boy I guess Gramma doesn't love us"

I took the cards, and sat down with my boys to explain that Christmas is NOT about money, or stuff....it's about caring, and loving, and being with the ones you love, and if you can't, let them know somehow that you do care, and you do love them.

My mother, not that the reason matters, but had a hard time of it the last few years, and felt quite badly about not getting the kids anything....

I explained it to her, to little avail.

The kids do not just rip cards open anymore, without reading them first...

AND, they write thank you notes to all who sent them gifts and cards, (money or not.)

More parents need to sit and explain the REAL reason for the season, and it's NOT some poor woman getting stomped on for a $29 f*cking DVD player.

That's my 2 cents, for what it's worth....

Wil

Not only that it has become bastardized, Lazarus, but it has become commercialized, too. Everyone (including us) at one point forgot its real meaning. I am glad that you taught your sons the meaning. One day Christmas once again will be what it is supposed to be. Good job!!

still feel sorry for that lady, though. All she will get unfortunately is a sore body, maybe a DVD, and some bruised feelings. Anyone thinking she will get more than that is just wishful thinking. Wal-Mart got contingencies for that stuff and will never claim liability

Natural's dead right.
You could pretty much see the kind of mood the crowd's in before they open the doors. Any normal person would truly wonder if his or her well being was in danger even before the bell rang.
I got news for ya...if it was me, and I had absolutely no choice but to be in such a situation to buy something, well, I'm telling you right now...no one's trampling me, without getting a leg broken, a need for new bridgework, or one of those price check guns rammed up their ass.
As for Wal-Mart...here's what I do: week before Christmas, I go there...seven ayem on a Sunday morning. No crowds, no bull, fill my cart and check out in under twenty minutes. Stress free. Who's smarter?

Bugger off, numpty-bollocker!

Merry Christmas to all and to all a black eye?!:wow:

Yeah, I loved that Walmart would HOLD the $30 player for her, not give it to her, but HOLD it!!! Amazing!

Oh yeah, by the way, Walmart made 1.2 BILLION Dollars on Black Friday alone in world wide sales...that is a LOT of DVD players.

In Philly, we have 3 radio stations playing Christmas music NON-stop!!! and not a single on plays the "funny" knock offs, just the originals which is fine but add the funny ones too.

A buddy of mine, was in line at oh 5am on Thanksgiving day @ Best Buy.
He was about the 40th person in line.
He wanted a few items, no biggie, what astounded him was that most of the people in front of him RAN to the DVD/CD area of the store.
As if 4-5 dollars off a DVD is a big deal, when DVD writers were going for $80...oh well.
