Worst WWE gimmick ever?

Ok, so now we have a arabic american threatening us and constantly reminding us of the horrors of 9/11. This has to be the most tasteless gimmick Vince has ever condoned. To be on one show (smackdown) and tell us how much they support the troops and advertise "this year we are going again".. then go to raw and slap us with an arab gimmick about the horrors of why we are involved in international conflict to begin with? C'mon Vince. This is not only two-faced and backstabbing, but the most tastless gimmick in WWE history. As a WWE fan you had to ask yourself just how long before this came along. In my opinion, far too soon. Shame on you Vince.

The only thing I've heard them complain about is the prejudice shown to Arab-Americans since 9-11...a very valid point. Drew and I were just discussing this gimmick the other night. We were trying to figure out if they were trying to make an effort to calm some of that prejudice or if they're taking advantage of it. Vince has done some editorial-type themes in the past. So, I'm personally leaning towards thinking the prior reasoning. If it's the latter, then I agree that it's not in good taste. However...

If they've said anything against the USA or our actions in Iraq, I certainly haven't seen it...and we watch (and tape) every show. The threats spoken during the promos are aimed solely at those who won't give them a chance. It's not a blanket threat against all Americans. I personally feel that it's one possible way to remind some of the dumb-shits, who think that every person of middle-eastern descent is a terrorist, that there are plenty of patriotic Arab-Americans who simply want to be allowed the same rights as everyone else. (This IS, after all, what they state in their promos.) Frankly, I have no problem with that.

The WWE has a huge audience. It's a good way to get this kind of message across. Vince has used the show to get other messages across as well. I see this as just another example of that.

Pay attention.....

Vince McNuggets has always used war as a tool to push heel wrestlers....

Cold War? Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff

Gulf War? Sgt. Slaughter is an Iraqi sympathizer

These gimmicks have a 50-50 rate of working well, however-

Sheik and Volkoff were a top heel team, whereas Slaughter fell flat and bombed BIG time...

Vince sees ratings drop, it's time for War gimmicks and "Big Men" to take center stage again....

You will notice, however, that WCW never stooped to that level....

Sure, they had "Sgt." Craig Pittman, but never in a tasteless angle like those Vince doles out....

But, most tasteless gimmick ever?

How's about HHH fucking a "corpse" on live tv?

I would put that up there, but honestly, bringing back visions of 9/11 is probably the worst damn thing anyone can do....bad enough the news brings up it's anniversary every year....

But, it's WWF.....tactfull they ain't....

You will also notice that WCW was a senior citzen center with directionless programming and never had the guts to do a risky gimmick because the wanted to be a G rated program. Gee that worked!

So if the angle of this character is to promote equality for all and non-racism.. why is he being built as a heel? Wouldn't that make him a good guy and we are supposed to cheer for him? I don't see that happening. I just think Vince is walking a tight rope with this one and the entire subject should have been left alone. I just wonder if he is going to stoop so low as to actually stage a terrorist attack to further this tastless angle that should have been avoided in the beginning.

The Old School Wrestlers Are Coming Back!

No more Doink the Clown folks! WWE is going towards a Killer Kowalski style of wrestler in Gene Snitsky (the savior of wrestling). Snitsky is so mean he makes you believe in his character much like Kowalski did. I only hope more Snitsky,JBL,Shelton Benjamin wrestlers get pushed and less Kane,Undertaker. Oh yeah and this push for Maven...ill advised, hes a piece of shit who won a game show not to be confused with a real wrestler. He doesnt even have a finisher! His matches are crap and the fans never cared about him so send him back to the Price is Right or whereever he came from!

I've read one report claiming Hassan has already been attacked by a fan at an OVW show. Don't know how true it is, but I hope the security guards are on their toes when he comes out ...

As for his wrestling skills, all I've heard is that he's a generic OVW guy. I'd certainly hope he's better than other OVW callups, like Tyson Tomko, Heidenreich, Luther Reigns, or Snitsky.

Gotta go along with Laz on this topic. I remember the "Iron Shiek/Anti-America" angle and when Sgt. Slaughter turned his back on the USA. And I recall thinking how wrong it was to have Farooq making his racist comments to Ahmed Johnson.(Am I getting his name right?)
But these things only last a few months, then die down when the controversy settles. As I'm sure they will with this Hassan fellow. I'm mainly interested in seeing his wrestling ability, he's got one huge neck.
Now as far as worst WWE gimmick? Triple H's "Katie Vick" angle, Big Boss Man desicrating the funeral of Big Show's father, and...of coarse....Al Wilson!(Yuk!!!)

And also as someone has mentioned earlier.. one can never forget the night Mae Young gave birth to a hand!!

Could've been worse...she could've given birth to Gobbldygooker Junior.

Even Laz can agree with this one. The worst gimmick they ever done was when they turned Terry Taylor into the Red Rooster:sowrong:

Largely because Bob Remus is one of the greenest promo givers in the history of the business. :blaugh: Remember his WM 7 promo for his match with Whiny Ass?
"Hulk Hogan, I am the new ruler of the WWF and you will bow down before me! etc etc etc".
If the guy ever did get knocked off his feet for real, at least his chin would stop him falling too far. :bouncybou

On top of which he kicked out of Hogan's finisher on not just this occasion, but also at Summerslam in the handicap match with Hellwig. On both occasions Earl Hebner ignored it and signalled for the bell anyway. Reminds me of the time Paul Roma sank his career.

To be strictly fair to Vince (not something I enjoy doing, as I hate the bastard's guts) not all characters and angles were of his design. It's true I suppose that he could have vetoed anything someone like Vince Russo came up with, so the ultimate responsibility does rest with him, but I wouldn't place the blame soley with him. WCW may have had a truckload more taste, but for years it was a wasteland of creativity and innovation. To be frank, it was as watchable as an automatic washing machine for years, largely due to the complete lack of back-stage talent of people like Ric Flair, Eric Bischoff and Bill Watts.

A corpse? Yow! I never saw that one. Mind you, I stopped watching when they started charging for main events over here. (About 4 years ago.) What was the thing with that angle Laz?

I can appreciate a lack of tact, as the face then comes along and weaves the heel's face into the canvas for it. That was of course, when we used to get more face wins, especially at main events. I'm a happy endings person, which is why I hate films like City of Angels and Cold Mountain.

Stone Cold crying like a baby on the bridge.

I remember that! 😀

Considering it went totally against everything his character had so sucessfully been, Williams did a wonderful and very selfless job of putting Angle over. The whole Stone Cold "ethos" came from the night of Wrestlemania 13 when he refused to submit to Bret Hart, despite being put in the sharpshooter twice for a total time over about 10 minutes. Agreeing to tap out for Angle's Angle-lock was pretty classy, even if subsequently slapping his wife around wasn't.

Oh Gawd! Survivor Series 1990, right? Possibly the worst and most ill-considered build up to a gimmick of all time. The crowd were booing like buggery and Gene Okerlund was desperately trying to play the "isn't this fun?" card, despite everything sliding rapidly down the arse-chute.

One has to believe the crowd found Okerlund trying a head-over heels with only slightly less athletiscism than Mil Mascaras taking a hip-toss, more entertaining than some dickhead dressed as a turkey, backflipping off the ropes.

Or Aldo Montoya's jockstrap/mask arrangement.😀 He only saw PPV action at the 93 Royal Rumble, it was that sucky.

repo man, doink and dink the clown, the brooklyn brawler(they made him a staff member).

Or when The Honky Tonk Man turned Billy Gunn into Rockabilly😛

Giant Gonzalez with the fake muscles ranks up there too. Only had a brief feud with the Undertaker then fell off the radar as quick as was on

Laz did say once that Steve Lombardi (a.k.a. the Brooklyn Brawler) was the man behind the Doink makeup. Now I trust most things Laz says because he knows his shit around the business, but I had a hard time swallowing that, because Doink actually moved with some grace and precision, wheras the Brawler looked more wooden than a goalpost.

No offence to Lombardi, he's a diamond geezer, but he ain't top-flight by any means.

What was his finisher?

I think Shawn Michael's gimmick was the most disgusting, irritating and pissing off I've ever seen. I gather it's pretty close to his actual personality. 😀

Well, Lombardi was -one- of the guys who played Doink. Matt Borne was the original Doink until he got canned for substance abuse problems, then Lombardi and Steve "Skinner" Keirn both spent time in the role before a guy named Ray Licachelli finally took it over. I've heard Licachelli is still playing Doink out in the indies, but I've never seen him.

My vote for worst wrestling gimmick of this year went to Undertaker bringing back the Dead Man act. It was cool for one night, and tedious after that, and spawned some truly horrible angles (like Booker T turning to voodoo...)

bear in mind i haven't been watching all that long so here are the gimmicks/storylines that bugged me in the few months(since Sept or Aug) i've been watching.

Kane/Lita/Snitski/Matt Hardy storyline....the miscarriage was upsetting to me

Carlito...he's just annoying and from the few times i've seen him on...he doesn't do much...him and his associate Jesus(hope i have the right term...i know it's not valet because that's what they used to call the women that would escort the men out) just irritating

JBL...if i wanted to watch a politician, i'd watch C-SPAN(that is if i got cable)

as for what i like: i like the Undertaker, and i love love love Edge(i know he's playing an arrogant, pissed off whiney SOB right now, but god he's hot).
🙂

Hmmm....not into the whole political thing with wrestling, just sick of story lines with marriage/kids/break-ups.....just shut up and wrestle.
Worst gimmicks - Bastion Booger. Chuck and Billy. Ricco. The McMahon family crap.
Best - Bret 'The Hitman' Hart (of course), Demolition, Headbangers, Stone Cold Steve Austin. Rowdy Roddy Piper.
Give Edge the title, and have Randy Orton smoke him for it.
