I was wondering if there were any writers on the forum - by which I mean anyone who is interested in writing stuff other than fetish fiction.

What sort of stuff do you like to write? And do you write just for yourself, as a hobby? Or do you try to get your work published?

(I am not a writer myself, but it's something I've been interested in since I was in my late teens.)

Cheeyers. 🙂

An excellent place for amateur writers to publish at no cost is Smashwords. They publish e-books only.

For amateur writers who want to publish something both in e-book and in print form, I recommend Lulu. Also at no cost to you, the author.

I write, I don't feel comfortable revealing too much about it though, but I'm happy to say that after a long period I just started working on something that's going really smoothly, since about a month ago thereabouts. Wish me luck!

I count, I guess! I've been writing fiction in my spare time for about four years now. Mostly young-adult stuff. Actually, entirely young adult stuff. Who am I kidding? And it's definitely with an eye towards getting it published.

Not that I have any expectation that it actually will, and not that I don't enjoy the activity in itself. That's actually kind of the point, I guess. I enjoy doing it so much that I can't drop the idea of being able to do it for a living someday, however unlikely that may be.

@milagros
Thanks for those links. Checked out lulu.com. Couldn't figure out how it worked at first, i.e. how it could be economically viable for the company. I wasn't even aware there was such a thing as print-on-demand self-publishing! *facepalm* I had a tinker around with all the possible printing options and managed to get the manufacturing cost of one book up to about $180 lol! Looks like a good site though.

Intriguing...

Good luck!

Cool. Are we talking short stories, novels...?

Both, I guess! A couple short stories, one of which I've since lost, one of which I naively submitted for publication, even though it was awful. I mean just real embarrassing stuff. But right now I'm working on a novel manuscript that I'm a little over 1/3d finished with. I think it's not terrible, maybe? I'm too attached to it right now to really know for sure.

I write with an intention of getting published, but the reason I haven't is because my standards are so high that I don't meet them yet. If I had time to dedicate to pure research I would probably get there, but for now I just procrastinate. I keep getting ideas and writing down what I can, but the ideas require greater skill than I currently wield. That's what happens when you cut your teeth on the best writing the 20th century has to offer: you get so intimidated that unless you can match them you feel like it's not worth the effort.

No genre or field restrictions (novels, short stories, etc.--I'm very eager to learn poetry) for me; whatever works best for the idea in mind is fair game for me.

Good luck with the novel!

@Amnesiac
I remember in an interview Martin Amis saying that if you’re gonna get into writing, better do it when you’re young, i.e. when you’re a little naïve and foolhardy. And then you just learn and improve as you go, competing with yourself to write something better than the last time. It’s good to be realistic about one’s talents, obviously, but you don’t want to be so aware of your own weaknesses and limitations that you’re aborting ideas the moment they’re conceived! lol

Maybe just read a couple of mediocre popular novels…? lol Get yourself thinking, "Well heck, I can do better than this!" 🙂

I tried to write short stories many years ago but my writing skills are lacking or it starts to feel like work and I give up

I'm a professional author. And although some of my work has erotic scenes, there's pretty much no tickling at all. I save that for the stuff I post here. 🙂

if you're interested in being a writer, there's no better way than to write stuff and no better time than now. So, indulge yourself, and watch yourself get better with practice. 🙂

Yup, that's me. I write professionally (which means it's my occupation, which means I get real money for what I write) - mostly horrors and thrillers, as those are my favourite genres.
