As most folks have already heard, Geocities will be shutting down operations next week. This will mean an end to a number of old TK sites still housed there. (I'll be archiving any that aren't moved.) I'm putting together a little farewell sendoff article for the Focus on Community section of my site. I thought it might be cool to get thoughts from others to ad in. So...

What tickle sites do you remember enjoying on Geocities? Did you ever have a site of your own hosted by them...tk or not? What did you think of them?

Please share your thoughts!

Until you said something,I did not know Geocities was shutting down heck,I didn't know they were still around What I remember most about Geocities was that they were a hosting site for pix A lot of people didn't care for that site from what I remember

I think the nickname for Geocities was geoshitties

LOL Yep. I used to call them that as well. They were a pain to work with...esp. bandwidth shutdowns every time you turned around. But, at least they were free!

I guess that was part of the problem, being free

I have a photobucket account for my pix of scale models and whatnot I pay $25 a year, and have no problems with bandwith issues I have 25 GB size for the money I pay

Wow I didn't know Geocities was shutting down. I have to go though and find some of my favorite fanfiction and save it. Never did much else through them but almost all my favorite fandoms had fanfic sites on geocities. That's kinda sad to see them ending but not sad to see all the pop ups gone and the site that never worked right.

thanks for reminding me...

Most of the photos I have posted on the TMF are hosted by Geocities! Got to move them to my Live Spaces photostorage.

Why not just post the TMF pix on the pix attachments option when you post a thread?

Well Ann, as you know that is where Hoteltickle started and planted roots for it's entire run. My thoughts are this...first you have to thank them for providing a FREE space for people to host sites. And on top of that, they had many useful tutorials and tools that helped teach people HTML. Also they had neat applications that you could add like guestbooks, counters, forms, etc... and this was way back in 1997-98. As the Hotel grew I needed more room and eventually bought my space from them whcih did two things. Got me more real estate and got rid of the ad's! I think that was the whole lure of GeoCities...get people to build their homes there and make it easy for them to do, and then as your needs grew they knew you would eventually pay for things instead of moving somewhere else! Worked on me! LOL The only complaint I ever had was that oneday my whole site vanished into thin air. I come to find out someone turned me in for violating terms of service saying I had nude pics on the site which was NOT true. I made sure that every pic had some kind of clothing on the person so I fought it and got the site back until I pulled the plug myself.

Overall, I think geoCities rocked and gave lot's of folk their start into the world of internet web site building.

peace out,
daddy

I agree, daddy. It was a great place for many to start out and good enough for many to stay. I had my original Tickle Chamber site there way back when. It was one of the better options for free hosting unless you wanted to get into the adult hosts and have all sorts of banners cluttering things up. I did that for a while as well. But, they were even worse to work with than Geo was. Many other sites started out there and learned how things worked before moving on to other hosting.

For those who've commented about having to grab things before they close...

I've saved every tk site I know of in its entirety and will be putting those that are not relocated up in archive form in coming weeks. So, if you don't catch them before they close down, don't worry. You'll still be able to access them by following the links in our Directories.

Good. Geocities was a total wast of time and energy. You would be able to post up and create anything you wanted within reason and then out of nowhere without warning rhyme or reason, your site was shut down.
Good Riddance to them at Geocities("I hope you had the time of your lives'"

Like many other business concepts around, Geocities as a "brand name" had served its purpose well. I had my humble beginnings there in the past. It helped me learn a lot on simple web authoring for my mainstream works. They have stats and provisions for residents.

We know that "nothing is free in this world." They put their ads there to pay for the use of space, except that there are rumors -- I won't be mongering. It could be fair in a way. It is a waste of time to those who have no use for it.

Then Yahoo bought it. (sniff of monopoly?) Whatever...

It was good before. I see a lot of people do their first creative sites there, until it ended up like any hot linking storage. Then it no longer served the purpose so much.

Like any biz shift, it is the end for those who expect it free . It is still there if one elects to upgrade to a paid membership.

I don't know that I'd say total. There were a lot of good sites that, in spite of all the problems, may not have been put up without what they had to offer. There were other servers out there for those who wanted to search for them. But, let's face it, many of us didn't have the time, internet/html knowledge or inclination to do so in the early days. They were far from perfect...perhaps even far from good. But, they still offered a service without which we may not have had some of those golden oldies.

Geocities was a bit of a woolly mammoth in my opinon. Good enough during the ice age but hopelessly outdated once the ice had thawed.

I totally agree with you. I used GeoCities. I built a website on it, of course I stopped doing stuff on that website long time ago bc I got lazy lol. But it's still where I first started using html and stuff and applying it and all that. I did have some stuff on GeoCities that I uploaded on there and had to move bc they're liked to my other places, like myspace and stuff and that was annoying, i hope I got all of it I needed still off of it.. I think I did. But I never had a problem with geocities.. people can complain about geocites but yeah, you have to remember that it's free and you have to pay to get the better version but for a free web hosting it was pretty good and I enjoyed it.
