I just came in. I'm drenched in sweat, it's so humid. It's June 11th and we haven't had a spring. We've had one day of almost spring (yesterday). You don't get spring or autumn anymore in New York. Which is a tragedy, because it's so beautiful. Summer is disgusting. And now? Any season can be warm. This January and February, warm. And then one day, it plunged to 10 below zero, which never happens, New York doesn't go into subzero temps. The next day it was 68 degrees. The next day. April never came, it was hot and humid. May was hot and humid. All the rose bushes in my neighborhood, all wilted, like it's the end of July. It just always feels unseasonal now, no matter what month of the year....always......there's even a new kind of weather condition, when it's like this muted, humid....like it's trying to be hot or cold but it can't quite do it.....like it's constipated or something.....like it's sick.
I've lived here my whole life. I didn't hear about global warming, I started to notice that my favorite season, autumn, wasn't coming, it was warm, like, three or four years in a row. This was in the late 80s, early 90s. I mentioned this to someone and they said, yeah, that's probably global warming. But I noticed the change before I heard about it. I don't believe everything I hear, I investigated it, rang true to me....and pretty much everything that I was reading then has come to pass since, and more and more each year. It is unambiguous.
Like everything else, the mentality of many people, for some curious reason, is stuck in the 80s, like a broken record. We have never left the 80s in so many ways, and this is one of them. When you hear a blithering idiot babble that the science is not in about this issue......just keep in mind, that this was the same exact line they were using back in the 80s. Like everything else, they've never updated their shit.
Now - pretending for a moment, as they do for the entirety of their lives, that the science in not in about whatever your favorite term is for "climate change" - perhaps had they put the investments into the issue back then, the science would be in by now. (which, of course, it is. no peer-reviewed paper published over the last 30 years disputes man's contribution to climate change, the only ones who do are funded by the energy industry.....big surprise, right?).
It's bizarre to me that nobody doubts science when it comes to their TV, their car, their toilet, their guns, their bombs...their planes, trains, computers, washing machines, vacuum cleaners......they go running to the doctor as soon as there's signs of trouble........only when it effects the bottom line of big business is suddenly science called in to question. Curious.
If you never got to experience autumn in New York, or sping.....you missed a beautiful thing.
Well.....at least we've got this song to remind us....
