I'm sure there was a reason at the time. I've got one that might make you chuckle. There's an old story (the article is no longer extant, save for mini-summaries like this one) of a server at UNC Chapel Hill that did its job faithfully for years. The trouble is, no one could find the bloody thing. Tracing wires, they finally ran into a section of drywall. As it turns out, maintenance folks had accidentally sealed it behind a layer of drywall, a tomb where it had lain, faithfully chuggin' away, all that time. 😀
