what makes some stocks better than others??

its craftsmanship for sure. some are really well put together and will last you a lifetime.

Hole size is super important - know the intended ¨victim¨ especially their wrist size. Many pillories come more as props than for actual captive functionality, so the hand holes in particular can be too large sometimes. But even if ther are, adding some cuffs usually does the trick. Also, they should be somewhat comfortable - ankles (the Achilles heel) can get sore if the pressure is uneven, so it may limit their tolerance to stay in them. Finally, if you are using a pillory (with head) make sure the wrists are far enough apart - speaking from my own experience as someone with broad shoulders, if the wrists are too near the neck you can cramp up after a short time. Cramps are NEVER a friend to a good scene!

I have food stocks with detachable magnetic leather ¨cuffs¨ that provide a little more comfort and make the wrist and ankle holes smaller. My girlfriend can slip her wrists out without them, but her ankles are locked in well as are mine. I rigged them to attach to the foot of the bed, same as the pillory.
