Last night I went to a Rosh Hashanah party at my realtives in NJ. Such is still a bit uncomfortable to me, because I have been away from these people for so many years. I saw my cousin Scott, an MD, for the first time in many years, and met his wife, Lisa, and her parents. Her father, Tony, is African American, and from the island of Anguilla. He's a medical doctor, and is very much my type of person, a laid back, intelligent, non judgemental man. I look forward to getting to know them better.
A cousin, Gail, who is the younger sister of the lady who insulted my mom on Passover. said to me. "Mitch, why dont you have a real job" ? Er.. bitch.. like its your business how I make a living. My dad told me to ignore her, and that he doesnt like her either.
This morning, my dad and I went to breakfast alone. Cheryl was still sleeping. As we were going back to his place, my dad got coffee for Cheryl, but said the following., these were his exact words. "Mitch, we have to stop, to get Sheila some coffee" At first I thought I was hearing things, but his mouth and lips clearly said "Sheila", who is, of course, my dead mom, and who he was married to for 23 years. Such goes to show that even though they are divorced over 20 years, and with his rage at her, he never got over my mom. My only regret with that is that my mom isnt still alive, so I could tell her. Maybe she heard it, in another world. My aunt the artist, mom's sister, nearly flipped when she heard that.
All in all it was a decent time. I'm going there for break fast for Yom Kippur next Wed, even though we dont fast.
Hopefully things will stay calm between he and I.
