Being white i could not possibly know what black men and women, sometimes even children, go through every day of their lives.
But i know it shouldn't be this way. There is a grave injustice being done. Unarmed and unresisting black people are being assaulted, punched, kicked over, knocked down, degraded, kneeled on, and needlessly killed.
My friends at the TMF, my heart hurts for you. It truly does. If you are black, it hurts in response to the ever-growing list of the people who look like you being slain like animals for no reason other than a biological adaptation to your ancestors latitude that resulted in darker skin. Because you're black.
If you are white, my heart hurts knowing that a lot of you are still on the fence, wondering what he did wrong, wondering what kind of pressures that police officer was under. Guess what? I get it. But you should also wonder this: was it an appropriate amount of force? Was the officer allowing their temporary emotions to cause a permanent death? And if white people are downright belligerent to cops every day and get off with actual and literal warnings, what makes it so black people can't do the same without having their life snatched from them? Does an unarmed, unresisting person deserve to die in this way? Is it fair? Is it what Lady Liberty would be proud of?
I would like to put on the record here and everywhere else that i believe that Black Lives Matter, that black lives are unfairly being targeted and are in danger, and i have been moved to attempt to help any way i can. Because my heart hurts, and because every day that i am not vocal about this i am partly responsible for real and continued oppression in a country that talks a big game about personal freedom and dignity but just can't deliver. Not yet.
