today I realized that I will have to miss a day blogging here on the TMF. I know that sucks for all of my loyal readers. but I am going on a much anticipated and much needed camping trip!
I guess I shouldn't just label this as a camping trip. although we will be camping this entire weekend, it's not all about hiking or relaxing. we are going to Knob Creek in Kentucky this weekend as part of the semi-annual machine gun shoot!
no, this doesn't actually mean that we get to shoot machine guns (although I have had the opportunity to shoot fifty rounds during one of the day shoots). but there is a gigantic gun show set up that takes two days to walk through. buying stuff is nice, but the main show takes up a few segments spread out throughout the weekend. twice during the day and twice at night, all of those who were lucky enough to sign up two years in advance and have enough money to blow thousands of rounds of ammo gather at the range. then they let loose with all of the firepower that they brought on a field of old trucks, cars, shanties and everything else. explosions galore! the night shows are really spectacular, because at some times, thirty different guys (and gals) are firing all sorts of different means of destruction with tracer rounds of different colors. it's really quite a spectacle.
I should also mention flamethrowers. you know those things in movies and videogames that you could only imagine seeing in real life torching some unlucky object? I've seen them before at the shoot. there is also a raffle at the very beginning of the weekend, and the winner gets to take a trip up in a helicopter to unleash machine gun fire on the entire field on Sunday.
suffice to say, I am pretty excited. it's worth not being able to shower.
