All of these postings about leaving or freaking out over not having friends on here has got me thinking about when I was a lurker.
When I first joined this site, I was kind of ashamed of my fetish. I felt kind of dirty about it. I could not share my fetish with any of my friends and had briefly played around with boyfriends before, but nothing too crazy. My friends were the type of people who considered any other position than missionary risque. I, on the other hand, had a large porn collection, would write erotica on a weekly basis, and thought people were weird if they didn't have a kink or fetish (because really, we all should have at least one).
I guess that I lurked because I was scared that people would yell at me for asking stupid questions(how crazy is that, its the internet), or I would be ignored. So I kept reading threads and basically got more and more frustrated. I was reading stories and thinking to myself, "when can I experience this?" I wanted to connect with others, and not feel like I was just an observer.
So I changed my profile, and started posting. At first, I did get a lot of crazy PMs. But in a forum of over 80,000 you are bound to get some weird messages. But eventually, they died down a lot and some very nice people emerged. That's what kept me coming back and posting some more. I just discovered the Radio shows and have been listening to all the archived shows while I am online. To actually hear people openly discuss their fetish is one of the most refreshing things ever.
So really, its up to you to make whatever kind of an experience you want to have on here. Some people are content just watching, others are itching to get involved, but aren't willing to put in the effort. It takes some time, but its a nice feeling when you connect with a person, and you don't even have to chat about tickling, you just make a friend.
