Cursing or *bleep*?

I dread trying to watch a movie on tv, not only that it's shortened, but that they either bleep out the curse words, silence everything when a curse word is said, or replace the word with something ridiculous like 'fruit' or something. Rap and hip hop are the worst, since they try and make clean versions of the songs that are half silenced from trying to censor all the cursing.

However, for comedy shows on television, sometimes I think it's funnier when they *bleep* out the curse words instead of actually letting them through. Most of the time you know what they're saying anyways, and the *bleep* in my mind is saying, "Hahaha he said a word too vulgar for television but didn't care hahaha!" My question to all is : are there times for you when the *bleep* is funnier than the actual curse word, or is it a completely annoying censory tool?

I'm torn. I don't like the FCC trying to protect me from things it thinks I'm not capable of hearing without being offended, but watching stuff with unnecessary amounts of vulgarity makes me feel like I'm watching something that I should have only found entertaining when I was thirteen.

Below is my favorite example of humorous censorship, although it obviously wasn't censoring anything. A forum member shared this here, a long time ago.

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/B-Wd-Q3F8KM?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/B-Wd-Q3F8KM?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

Can editing or bleeping work for a serious movie? Sure. here's an example.
<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/I8bB8fw0bzQ?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/I8bB8fw0bzQ?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

That being said. As far as comedies go, I admit, i find the bleeping funnier. Drawn Together, for example, i found funny as shit when they bleeped stuff. I'm not sure wehy it is, but bleeped footage is funnier then not.

For some reason I see the bleeping as funnier too.

The one thing I can't imagine is how they are going to port Curb Your Enthusiasm to network television with all its cursing. It's not just that they curse, but the way they curse that is so hilarious! Especially Jeff's wife.

How can someone dare ruin Susie?

In terms of watching a film or music censorship is stupid or annoying. But I totally agree and I think that in comedy shows (In particular for me South Park) it just isn't half as funny when they just say the swears as opposed to bleeping them out.

The place where it's most hysterical is reality TV shows like "Big Brother," for two reasons: (1) it's usually so obvious what the curse word is that there's hardly any point, and (2) it's puzzling how certain things are okay to say, like Chiara in BB3 saying "I don't mind knowing how big a guy's penis is as long as it's not going to be inside of me." That was played on national television, prime-time. (I only watch shows like that occasionally, to trash them.)

OMG, The Count Censored almost made me p**s my pants :laughhard:
The general opinion seems to be that it's appropriate for comedy shows, but stupid on other occasions. I agree with this too.
I've always taken a pretty dim view of censorship in all it's forms and believe people are quite capable of their own filtering - if you don't like it, don't watch it.

yeh i hate bleeping. whats the big deal its a swear word. im not 4 and of a nervous disposition im sure i can take it. fuckers...

I've seen many movies in the theater, so I try not to watch films which I know have a lot of swear words in them, on regular TV, unless absolutely necessary. To me, editing out, even swear words, is like not showing me the whole movie.

I know the FCC has their "regulations" , "Decency", and what not,. but.. seriously.. do they really think that whoever they are trying to protect from the vulgar words, kids, etc, can't turn on HBO, to watch the big, bad, vulgar movie in it's entirety, swear words, and all.

Sometimes, I think there is just way too much made out of things like this.

Network ok but why it needs to be done on cable when we pay for it is beyond me. All and all evey week I look foward to see what Jimmy Kimmel does with his unnecessary censorship bit.

Censoring w/o the *bleeps* :

?

Curb Your Enthusiasm cn be played late nite on Network TV (Which it does) because late night / early morning has less restrictions than during normal hours. Curb Your Enthusiasm is on the CW Network here in the USA at like 11pm I believe.
