so, here's the deal.

i'm considering dreadlocks. i'm moving out of my mom's place this spring or summer-ish and i'd like to get them once i have my own place (so my mom is less likely to be ridiculously furious).

has anyone here had dreads? i'd love to know about the process of creating them, what to expect, how to maintain them, and probably most importantly, how to remove them without shaving my head.

share your experiences here. i'm excited to hear what y'all have to say. :)

I know of only one person who removed them without shaving her head. It took her several hours a day, for many months, to just untangle her hair using her fingers and a comb. It was very painful, her hair needed some serious rehab to recover from the damage, and she looked terrible during the process of transition.

Long story short, if you don't want to shave your head, you probably shouldn't get em, or at least get the kind that can be grown out without auto-knotting new hair that grows. Then you can just chop them off when your hair gets long enough... of course, that will also look pretty stupid as you grow them out...

I hope this has been helpful. I'm very tired.

Speaking of Buzzzzzzzkills.... :p I'm not fully conscious either.

That sounds like fair warning  Ouch.

I always loved the effect (when they don't look dirty.... :ermm: ) but that would definitely give me pause...

though I like/d them better on Bob Marley, may he rest in peace....

You should ask TexasT, it appears he's had some experience too :p Might be an easier route there...

Would you be doing this for spiritual and/or cultural reasons, or simply as a fashion statement?

I knew one girl who used to have dreadlocks...she mentioned that her hair got pretty disgusting. By the end, she actually had insects living in it. :xlime:

So, there's that...

Do not wash hair for 48 hours. After that braid hair. Never wash hair again. Never cut hair again.

There ya go, you now have dreads!

Dreads are alright... sometimes. Actually, only at first. I've been behind girls that have had them for a while, and it looks like their hair has cobwebs all over it.

Not a good look.

crystal bowersox knows how to rock them!

i say do it!

Dreads hanging around the face will cause you to break out...bad.

No more than any other kind of hair around your face would cause a breakout, if you take proper care of them and keep them clean.

you can also try braiding in fake dreads using your own hair, doesn't require shaving or anything. I also once met a guy who said he used used motoroil to create instadreads.

Emily! If you want them then I say go for it. I would like to say something though. I have only seen pictures of you but You are a very pretty young lady. Your hair is gorgeous. I think you should leave it the way it is. Just my opinion. Dreds are awesome though. I know many people that have them. Good luck!

My personal opinion. Dreads are unattractive as well as very difficult to keep clean. The only people I've ever seen that can pull off the dread look are people who are so ugly the hair is the last thing to matter.

Dreads will demage your hear and recovery prosess is very long several years at very least....
