Favorite cover track?

As much as I love the original version of "Aquarius" and "Let The Sunshine In" by the cast of Hair...

Hair- (The Original Broadway Cast) -"Aquarius" and "Let The Sunshine In" (1968)

... I've gotta say that I really LOVE the cover version by The Fifth Dimension:

The Fifth Dimension - "Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In (The Flesh Failures)" (1969)

There is a lot of great choices in this thread. I also really like Gary Jules' cover of Mad World.

A Perfect Circle's cover of "Imagine" by John Lennon, and The Network's cover of "Teenagers from Mars" by The Misfits

reel big fish's cover of aha's "take on me", john denver's cover of "let it be", the guess who's cover of "blackbird", peaches' cover of electric 6's "gay bar", save ferris' cover of "come on eileen", goldfinger's cover of "is she really going out with him", lemonheads' cover of "mrs. robinson", 311's cover of the cure's "love song", and i should probably stop because i'm getting carried away. i just really, really love covers.

a few more, since this thread seems to be cooling its jets as of late:

I think that Green Day did a good job with Lennon's "Working Class Hero", and also like what Thin Lizzy did with the Irish folk song "Whiskey in the Jar".

abso-frickin-lutely,, this may be the best example yet of a song that is actually enhanced during it's cover (and i've heard rumors that even Trent Reznor agrees). this is as great an example of a good situation as Sheryl Crow's cover of G&R's "Sweet Child O' Mine" is a bad example (or, rather, a good example of Sheryl Crow ruining the song).

lovin' the feedback on this thread folks,, LOTS of great examples of kick ass covers. anyone got their worst cover examples?

I can't even think of "The First Cut Is the Deepest" without getting Sheryl Crow's version stuck in my head. And wanting to die. (Not that it's one of Cat Stevens' best imo)

Hatebreeds cover of Metallicas ''Escape'' is pleasing to the ear,at least to mine.

HIM's cover of "Wicked Game" has always been a favorite of mine. Honorable mentions go to Killswitch Engage's "Holy Diver" and Machinehead's "Hallowed Be Thy Name."

KSE's version of Holy Diver was a great cover.While I feel it falls short of the original it still has tremendous appeal in a new school kind of way.Howard Jones is an amazing vocalist.

A band called The Musical Box does Peter Gabriel era Genesis and now A Trick of the Tail. They've performed The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Selling England By the Pound and many others to absolute perfection, down to the costumes and stories by Gabriel. I've seen them 5 times and I'll keep going every year. They are endorsed by Genesis and Gabriel himself has been in attendance along with Phil Collins guesting on the drums. Any prog rock fan or Genesis fan would love it.

Bumping this thread, 'cause it was fun while it lasted. Also, more recent addition(s), since i love both bands, would be Depeche Mode's cover of U2's 'So Cruel'…there are a few cool covers on the AHK-toong Bay-bi promo album.

And i'm a huge Peter Gabriel fan, but love some/hate some of what he's doing with the 'Scratch my Back' effort…

Cheers, -P

The CCR cover of "Heard it Through the Grapevine" would be my favorite, if I had to pick just one. I also like the Talking Heads version of "Take Me to the River" (though I've never heard the original) and the Detroit Cobras' "Hey Sailor".

I had to stop by for this. I'm a huge Gabriel fan as well, and got to see The Musical Box at the Imperial Theater a while back. British Pink Floyd and Australian Pink Floyd weren't too shabby either. Now back on topic. lol Not in any specific order:

Ween's cover of Led Zeppelin's All Of My Love
Elton John's cover of The Beatles Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
Roxy Music's cover of John Lennon's Jealous Guy
David Bowie's Pinups cd which is all covers and last with the majority of The Spiders from Mars
Cheap Trick's covers of Fats Domino's Ain't That A Shame and Elvis Presley's Don't Be Cruel
David Gilmour, Rick Wright and David Bowie cover of Syd Barrett's Arnold Layne
Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton, Moon River

I like all of these. I'm sure there are many more, but I can't think of any right now. :doh:

Kelly Sweet does a nice cover of Phil Collins' "In the air tonight" on of my favorite coves of that song

Bator, very cool…I was in London for work, years ago, around the time he was doing a lot of stuff for OVO at the Millennium. Didn't get to go, sucked, but would certainly like to check out a show on the Back2Front Tour. We'll see.

And thanks all for playing again…glad to see this thread gaining new blood.

Glad to see this thread!!! Never saw it, when it first got going!!!

So many to chose from...and being the hard/classic/metal fan that I am.....

SCORPIONS..."Can't Explain" (The Who)
VAN HALEN....they've done many, but have to agree with..."You Really Got Me" (The Kinks)
CHEAP TRICK...(not really a cover...but a huge improvement over the original)..."That 70's show, theme"
METALLICA...gotta go with "most of" their cover "tribute album"...GARAGE, INC.!!!...especially.....
.................."Astronomy" (Blue Oyster Cult)
.................."Sabra Cadabra" (Black Sabbath)
.................."Stone Cold Crazy" (Queen).....to name a few!!!

And even though they're "parodies", and not technically covers...who doesn't love WEIRD AL??!! Especially the Michael Jackson songs!!!

Gregorian Chant stuff...

[Example: the cover for "Nothing Else Matters" and "Losing my Religion"]

Thanks Pete! I just remembered some others lol

Jimi Hendrix...Hey Joe{Billy Roberts}
The Pogues...Dirty Old Town{Ewan MacColl}
Heart...Rock and Roll, The Battle of Evermore{Led Zeppelin}
Gary Moore and Friends...Whiskey In The Jar. I don't know who wrote it. Everyone has done it though, from Tommy Makem and The Clancy Brothers, The Dubliners to Thin Lizzy and Metallica, but I like this version best.

Folks mentioned a lot of good covers. Xochipilli mentioned one of my favorites, namely Devo's version of Satisfaction. (Mick Jagger approved)
David Bowie does a pretty good cover of Cactus by the Pixies.

I'm also partial to REM's cover of the song Where's Captian Kirk by Spizzenergi.

And of course my brain is forgetting the handful of other covers I enjoy, but just can't recall.

What a great list of tunes! How about Gary Jules cover of Mad World by Tears For Fears. I believe it is also in the soundtrack for Donnie Darko.
