Bruce Springsteen - Jersey Girl
By Tom Waits, but The Boss has the definitive version. And that's saying something!

The Clash's cover of Pressure Drop by Toots and the Maytals
abso-frickin-lutely,, this may be the best example yet of a song that is actually enhanced during it's cover (and i've heard rumors that even Trent Reznor agrees). this is as great an example of a good situation as Sheryl Crow's cover of G&R's "Sweet Child O' Mine" is a bad example (or, rather, a good example of Sheryl Crow ruining the song).
lovin' the feedback on this thread folks,, LOTS of great examples of kick ass covers. anyone got their worst cover examples?
HIM's cover of "Wicked Game" has always been a favorite of mine. Honorable mentions go to Killswitch Engage's "Holy Diver" and Machinehead's "Hallowed Be Thy Name."
I had to stop by for this. I'm a huge Gabriel fan as well, and got to see The Musical Box at the Imperial Theater a while back. British Pink Floyd and Australian Pink Floyd weren't too shabby either. Now back on topic. lol Not in any specific order:
Ween's cover of Led Zeppelin's All Of My Love
Elton John's cover of The Beatles Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
Roxy Music's cover of John Lennon's Jealous Guy
David Bowie's Pinups cd which is all covers and last with the majority of The Spiders from Mars
Cheap Trick's covers of Fats Domino's Ain't That A Shame and Elvis Presley's Don't Be Cruel
David Gilmour, Rick Wright and David Bowie cover of Syd Barrett's Arnold Layne
Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton, Moon River
I like all of these. I'm sure there are many more, but I can't think of any right now.
