I recently found a book in my community library entitled,"The History of Torture and Execution" by Jean Kellaway. In it there is a chapter entitled, "Before The Age of Reason." In this chapter is the history of the Pillory. A small article appears to the left about the Stocks saying.....A cousin of the pillory was the stocks, which comprised parallel wooden boards, this time encasing the ankles. The victim was compelled to sit on a stool with their legs outstretched. Again, he was unable to escape the attention of the crowd.COMICAL THOUGH IT MAY SEEM TODAY, ONE OF THE WORST ASPECTS OF THE PUNISHMENT WAS CONTINUAL TICKLING ON THE SOLES OF THE FEET. The prisoner might also be bodily attacked and left bruised and battered.
Ah! The public library system keeping history alive!
