I Pity You

I don't know why this popped into my head, but a long time ago I remembered my teacher had come into the class room (this was a small class room BTW with only a few students) and he said that a fellow teachers husband had been killed in a car accident and he had just came back from the showing. He told us the story about what had happened to the husband. Well I asked him if he said anything to the teacher and he said yeah, he said he walked up to the woman and said "I pity you."

And I was thinking that was pretty strange. Well I said "Did you really say that? I pity you?" And he said yeah, he did.

What kind of thing is that to say anyways? I pity you? I thought that was incredibly insensitive of the guy and told him so. lol. I got in trouble for that. Doesn't that strike anyone else as insensitive?

Certainly wouldnt be my choice of words, but Im sure the intent was possitive, in situations like that we can often just say things the wrong way, I hope it was taken as it was meant.

I don't think the teacher rose a fuss about it, but yeah poor choice of words.

That's like saying "sucks to be you!"

"You have my sympathies" would have been way more tactful.

Definitely a weird choice of words.
"Pity" is a value-loaded term that is usually delivered to people in a clearly inferior position. The other person might have been suffering but certainly not inferior.
