If Bigamy Or Polygamy Were Legal, Would You Want More Than One Spouse?

As I may have posted before, I watch the HBO show "Big Love", the premise of which is about a Mormon family in Utah, with the husband played by Bill Paxton from Apollo 13, who is a Polyagamist, and has three wives.

While the show is interesting, it seems that Paxton's character has his hands full. He has three wives, three houses, seven children, and a "schedule" of nights which he spends with each of his wives. It also seems that, since each wife gets only two nights, or sometimes, three, each week, that he is obligated to "perform" sexually, every night, to keep all of the women satisfied.

One episode had Paxton popping Viagra to be able to perform, and another one had him requesting a "Seventh Day Rest" from sex and responsibilities, to catch his breath, to which is first, legal wife, played by Jeanne Tripplehorn, said "This is what you signed up for, Bill, no seventh night off". There have also been scenes of the show, showing all three wives screaming at him, at once!

So, my question is, for both sexes. If bigamy or polgyamy were legal, would you want more than one spouse?

After watching the show, I've mused this question for myself. I would for one reason, but wouldn't for two very important others. If I had two wives, and, for example, found someone with all the qualities, who was not into having her feet played with, or being tickled, I could then theoretically have a second wife, who I could do the fetish things with. "Big Love" shows this in regard to oral sex. There is a scene where Chloe Sevigny, who plays the second wife, witnesses Ginnifer Goodwin, who plays Paxton's third wife, giving and receiving oral sex. On Paxton's night with Sevigny, he tries to give her oral sex, and she refuses.

I would balk at having multiple wives for two other reasons. One, the "morality" of being married to one person for life, and two, I wouldn't want the hassle of having to deal with the complexities of relationships with more than one wife. Emotionally, sexually, etc.

While the show portrays Paxton as being "moral", as he supports all his wives, and all his children, and everyone knows about the goings on within the family, I know that from a real sense of "morality", the most moral thing is to be with one wife. Then..I start to think, what about men who leave their first wives, and dont pay alimony and child support, while living comfortable lives with their second wives? To me, that is less "moral" then what Paxton does in the show.

So, the question is, if it were legal to be married to more than one person, would you do so?

LOL. If you've ever watched the show, bad, you know that one of Bill's father in laws is Harry Dean Stanton, who plays Roman Grant, Chloe Sevigny's father, in the show, and Bill's nemesis. Bill and Roman have had plenty of problems during the course of the show.

While the hornball in me would say "yes" to legally having several different women to bed, it would be WAY too much trouble satisfying more than one woman, or even taking care of different children from several different women. Besides, there aren't many women out there that would put up with that kind of arrangement. If the shoe was on the other foot, I know I wouldn't. NOBODY is worth that much trouble... except maybe Kate Beckinsale. :p

For me, I couldn't be one of ___ wives or have more than one husband. I'm one-on-one type of person and I don't want to share or be shared.

Having to deal with the numerous families would suck, but if i could just be with the women, then id marry a hundred women if i could.

Coup, you have a good point.

maniac, I agree with you. Dealing with numerous families would suck. I see how much trouble Paxton's character has in the show. It seems like some problem is always erupting.

Marrying 100 women? OMG, you are too much! "Thinks of how it would be to have 100 wives". Never! LOL.

Oh hell no!! I couldn't take the constant chatter or being hounded about how to fold or hang a dish towel.

I know that from a real sense of "morality", the most moral thing is to be with one wife.

Don't confuse monogamy with morality, historically they've had nothing to do with one another and they still don't. The 'moral' thing is to be with however many people you want to be with, who want to be with you, and make sure everyone involved is happy and well cared for :)

:iagree: Exactly.

And since this is pretty much the necessary condition to having multiple wives, I'm sure I'd have several. If I were a millionaire or a king in a world with no divorce and in which women were considered property, fit for nothing except rape and babymaking? God yes. I'd probably take them young, too. And I'd chastise them with a stick no wider than my thumb.

But since we live in a civilized society, I can't do that, just like I can't own slaves or find out what human flesh tastes like. I guess it's a worthwhile tradeoff, but, still...

Having multiple wives, I can say for certain, yes. :D

But seriously, I would probably say yes anyway. I think all human beings have the capability to love human beings in their entirety and every love is different. I don't love all of my friends in the same way, and so, too, it would be for relationships. I think it would take some very NON jealous, committed individuals, but I think it's entirely possible. And I definitely think what's good for one person is good for another. :) No saying yes for yourself and no for your spouse. Love is love is love, no matter what.

Honestly, I don't think I could fairly divide my time between two full-time husbands. I would always feel like I was neglecting one or the other. Now, if I were to have a husband who I made babies with and lived with and built a life with, and a boyfriend who I went out on dates with and saw a few times a week, I think I could enjoy that.

However, I honestly don't think that I'm mature enough or secure enough or whatever you want to call it to feel comfortable with my husband having a girlfriend. I'm not a jealous person in relationships, and the reason for that is because no matter who my boyfriend flirts with or cuddles with or plays with, I know that at the end of the day he's mine and he's coming home to me and he's lying in bed with me. All of that other stuff doesn't take away from my relationship with him because I know that ultimately our relationship is on a different level. If he had another relationship on the same level as his and mine, I don't know if I could feel the same way. I guess it's not something I'd be entirely opposed to trying, though. You never know how you're gonna feel about something until you throw yourself in and try it.

I know some people who practice Polyamory. No actual legal marriage involved, but just the practice of open relationships with different partners... some of whom get classified as just lovers, others full emotional partners etc etc...

It works for them, but requires so much damn talking and honesty and openness to maintain emotionally. Fuck that.

I would say no, absolutely not. I haven't found another person to love as much as my wife (indeed at all) nor have I been looking. Plus, I know my wife's thoughts towards polygamy/bigamy reflect my own.

Yes please.

Chop, chop, dig, dig, chop, chop, dig, dig.

EDIT: Also group sex. But mostly due to 'chop, chop, dig, dig'.

I'm probably the only person who's first thought went to "wow... three different incomes at once. Talk about financial stability!" =D

Nope, you're not. There are plenty of multi-partner families out there, on the down-low because it's still frowned upon in most communities, and putting more $$ in the pot is one of the many benefits.

I would be honored to have you as one of my wives!
