Is this true?

While talking to a musician friend, a fabulous singer, she told me that one of the best voice training methods was laughter. She said that her lover (female) would tie her down and tickle her to hysterics. The involuntary laughter made her voice go to places she couldn't take it voluntarily, thus exercising vocal notes that she couldn't reach of her own will. Wow. She certainly does have a great range vocally.

Do you think this is true? I don't know why she would say it otherwise, she isn't aware that tickling is one of my fantasy's.

Probably get the same vocal range training with a hammer and a thumb.

If she is somehow able to think, analyze, and remember notes she hits while being bound and tickled (especially ones never previously reached) that is some serious talent indeed.

Your vocal cords are like everything else in life. If you use them they get better and stronger. Could be wishful thinking that tickling/laughing hysterically is really training haha. Since I do sing time to time jamming with my buddies it just further supports that I should get some tickling going on.
:tickle: ---> :sing:

I am a classically trained soprano and have a vocal performance degree. I took classes on vocal pedagogy and this surprisingly never came up. What every singer does know or really should know is screaming too much can cause damage to the vocal chords. I guess whether or not it would/could cause damage would depend on the type of laughter and how often you get tickled.

Hasn't helped my range at all. I was an alto before and I'm an alto now.

It sounds like a fantasy story you'd find with the ones that swear that being tickled makes you lose weight better than anything else.

I don't know if this would work, but it sounds like fun anyway. There's no reason to disbelieve your friend and I would take it as a little unorthodox, but if it works for her, then it's all cool.

I've never heard this from any vocal coach and it doesn't make a ton of sense - vocal range is about the notes you can get your voice to hit and control. You're unlikely to gain control of any range while being tickled. If anything you'd risk damaging your voice from straining it.

Sorry mate, doesn't seem likely to me.

Thanks for all your views :)

I don't know if it really works for her, or even if that really is part of her training ..... but if it is I'd love to watch :)

I know, right? Especially if you're EXTREMELY ticklish!
