WEST CHESTER, Pa. (AP) — A recently convicted murderer who's been on the run for days after escaping a suburban Philadelphia prison was spotted shortly after midnight Saturday by residential security cameras in an area not far from the prison, authorities said.

Authorities haven't disclosed the circumstances of how Danelo Cavalcante, 34, managed to escape Thursday morning from Chester State Prison, and say the episode is under investigation. He was sentenced to life in prison last month for killing his ex-girlfriend in front of her children, and escaped while awaiting transfer to state prison.

Cavalcante was seen on cameras at around 12:30 a.m. in Pocopson Township, roughly 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) from the prison, the Chester County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement.

Local police also received a report of an attempted burglary at a home around 11:30 p.m. Friday, although it wasn't immediately clear if Cavalcante was involved.

The district attorney's office said Cavalcante's appearance has not changed since he fled — a white T-shirt, a backpack, curly black hair and a closely cropped beard and mustache. Authorities described him as 5 feet (1.5 meters) tall and 120 pounds (54 kilograms).

A jury convicted Cavalcante of murdering Deborah Brandao in 2021.

He is also wanted in his native Brazil in a separate slaying in 2017 and is considered an extremely dangerous person, authorities said.

Prosecutors say he killed his girlfriend to stop her from telling police about the charges against him in Brazil. He was captured in Virginia after Brandao’s killing and authorities believe he was trying to return to his home country.

Law enforcement officers have been using drones, helicopters and dogs to locate Cavalcante. Searchers were focusing on railways, waterways and routes out of the area. The prison is roughly 25 miles (40 kilometers) west of Philadelphia.

Chester County District Attorney Deb Ryan said Friday that authorities believe Cavalcante is trying to flee south, but also have no evidence that Cavalcante has left the area or that he is receiving assistance from others.

Authorities said area residents should continue to scan video from their doorbells or surveillance cameras for anything suspicious and check their cars, sheds and any outbuildings. They also advised people to check the homes of vacationing neighbors and look out for missing cars, bicycles or any other mode of transportation Cavalcante could use to aid his flight.

Robert Clark, supervisor of the U.S. Marshals fugitive task force in Philadelphia, said the Brazilian consulate was advised of Cavalcante’s escape.

It’s not the first time an inmate was able to escape from a Pennsylvania lockup this year.

A homicide suspect was on the run for over a week after fleeing the Warren County jail on July 6 by climbing on exercise equipment, going through a window and scaling down a rope fashioned from jail bedding. He was caught looking dirty, wet and “worn out” from living in the wilderness to evade arrest, authorities said.

On May 7, two inmates escaped from the Philadelphia Industrial Correction Center by cutting a hole in a fence surrounding a recreation yard, and were gone for nearly 19 hours before officials knew they were missing. Both we captured the next week.

Hopefully, the cops can make sure he has no chance of escaping again, if you know what I mean.

Yeah, if he kills that easily I wouldn't mourn either if he resists arrest.

Don't leave cars or homes unlocked!!

He's changed his appearance, is now clean-shaven, light green hoodie over a baseball cap, stole a van, ran out of gas, he's probably seeking another vehicle...

Obviously be really careful if you live around this area!

Escaped convict Danelo Cavalcante spotted with altered appearance, driving stolen van, police say

Police say their focus is to capture escaped convict Danelo Cavalcante.

The Pennsylvania State Police is coming under scrutiny after conceding that convicted murderer Danelo Cavalcante, who escaped from a prison 11 days ago, snuck through a perimeter guarded by hundreds of officers, stole a van, altered his appearance and drove miles north where he tried to contact two former work colleagues, officials said.

Cavalcante was spotted late Saturday in East Pikeland Township, more than 20 miles from where officials thought they had him pinned down in the Longwood Gardens, a sprawling horticulture attraction about 5 miles southwest of the prison he escaped from six days ago in Pocopson Township, Lt. Col. George Bivens, deputy commissioner of operations for the Pennsylvania State Police, said at a news conference Sunday afternoon.

"No perimeter is 100% secure, ever. I'm not going to make excuses. I wish it had not happened," Bivens said. "This is a minor setback. We'll get him. It's only a matter of time."

Bivens said the 34-year-old Cavalcante allegedly stole a white work van from Baily's Dairy sometime Saturday night about three-fourths of a mile from the perimeter around Longwood Gardens. He said the van was unlocked and the keys were left inside, enabling Cavalcante to easily steal the vehicle.

The van, a 2020 Ford, was found abandoned at 10:40 a.m. Sunday in a field behind a barn in East Nantmeal Township, Bivens said, adding that the van had run out of fuel.

"We are obviously very concerned that Cavalcante has or will attempt to steal another vehicle to facilitate his escape," said Bivens, adding that the search for the fugitive could potentially become a national manhunt.

He said investigators believe Cavalcante is still in Pennsylvania and have refocused the search to the East Nantmeal Township area in northern Chester County.

Officials released still photos from a video doorbell camera of a clean-shaven Cavalcante wearing a green hooded sweatshirt over a dark baseball hat.

Bivens said the video was taken at 9:52 p.m. Saturday at the home in East Pikeland Township, near East Nantmeal Township, that belongs to a man who once worked with Cavalcante.

"He spoke with the individual via a video doorbell at that residence and inquired about meeting with that individual," Bivens said.

He said Cavalcante's former colleague was not home at the time. He said that when the homeowner returned to the residence he checked the footage on his surveillance camera and called local police.

At the time he was recorded on the doorbell camera, Cavalcante was seen driving the white Ford van.

Cavalcante, according to Bivens, also showed up at another former work colleague's home in nearby Phoenixville around 10:07 p.m. Saturday.

"That associate was not home but a female resident observed Cavalcante and called her friend. That friend responded to the residence and eventually placed a call to local police," Bivens said.

Bivens said police didn't learn Cavalcante had eluded their perimeter at Longwood Gardens until about 12:30 a.m. Sunday, when they received reports of the sightings of the fugitive in East Pikeland Township and Phoenixville.

"This was our first indication that Cavalcante had been able to travel from the area of Longwood Gardens," said Bivens, adding that the owner of the stolen van did not know the vehicle was missing until police contacted him early Sunday.

Bivens was pressed by reporters on how Cavalcante could slip through a police perimeter fortified by up to 400 officers.

He said there were a number of drainage areas and underground tunnels at Longwood Gardens that could not be secured, Bivens said.

Bivens said Cavalcante is showing his desperation by attempting to contact associates.

"He's absolutely looking for support. He needs that support and doesn't have it," Bivens said.

Cavalcante escaped Aug. 31 from Chester County Prison, where he was being held after being convicted of stabbing his former girlfriend to death in broad daylight, officials said. He's alleged to have sneaked out of the prison by "crab walking" up a wall in a prison recreation yard, pushing his way through razor wire and accessing the roof, where he climbed down and made his getaway an hour before prison guards realized he was missing, officials said.

Authorities believe Cavalante followed the same route and method of escape as an inmate who bolted from the prison in May.

Police have received numerous reports of sightings during the 11-day manhunt, most of those in the Pocopson Township area.

Law enforcement warned that Cavalcante should be considered "extremely dangerous."

Bivens said he has no "substantive proof" that Cavalcante has obtained a weapon, but noted that investigators believe he has burglarized several homes.

He said police are "authorized to use deadly force" if Cavalcante is cornered and refuses to surrender peacefully.

Prisons are pretty understaffed in PA, especially in Philadelphia. Plus the working conditions are tough. Source: many corrections officer friends and co-workers, some of which are recently retired.

Anyway, dude stole a rifle now and is armed. Nothing like a cold-blooded killer being armed with a high-powered rifle. Something tells me one way or another he ain't going back to prison. It's either freedom or a body bag at this point.

Well they got him. He's back in custody. Alive. No shots fired. I.pressive. hopefully they send him to max security

Freaking states need to start staffing the prisons and detention facilities a lot better and start MAKING the prisons and facilities a lot more HUMANE!

As they are right now most prisons are severely understaffed, overcrowded, and treat inmates like a disposable commodity (at best) or like garbage (at worst)!

Thankfully!

Definitely! :/ There are way too many human rights violations, that should never happen, in the U.S. especially.

Yup, again, prisons are severely overcrownded, understaffed, and in desperate need to repair and or replacing!

They also need to give these prisoners something to fucking do with their damn time! A human being isn't meant to just be in a damn 5 by 5 foot cell all day long. Is it any wonder inmates come out of the justice system even worse than they went in?

With more careful oversight outdoors in "recreation" areas or whatever they call them. Nobody should be raped in prison.

Plus they're often not given basic needs - Enough food, toothpaste & toothbrushes, over-the-counter pain meds, eyeglasses (!!).

And then add in all the people who are either there for years due to minor drug charges (!!) Prisons for Profit, every head counts. That system is insane.

And those who are completely innocent. How many of these people have been freed by DNA, proving one eyewitness can be wrong, or circumstantial evidence is not nearly enough --- :(
Corrupt cops, lawyers, etc. need to be penalized and removed more efficiently & with harsher sentences if they've been planting or ignoring evidence just to get a conviction... See above.

We need an overhaul and yes, these people need safe, productive activities -- libraries, classes --

There's a petition to allow the local prisons in my part of NY state to have green house gardens that the inmates can tend too that will provide them with fresh produce for their meals. It's a start but the super max prison for women still has a hard line sheriff who refuses to even provide the female inmates with new underwear they can buy. I've decided I hate the people in charge of the prison system in my area.

I couldn't care less about the "humane" nature of prisons. The only thing that really matters is allowing people to re-integrate into society after serving their sentence. More effort should be made to allow people to find decent jobs after prison. It would reduce recidivism.

As for what goes on in prison itself... punishment should fit the crime. If you killed or raped somebody, prison should be harsh, to say the least.

Mac, most prisoners (over 90% of them) are low-level offenders who don't deserve the lengthy prisons sentences their given.

As for making prisons harsh, we've tried that. We're doing that as we've speak. It doesn't work. All it does is lead to inmate death and creates a more hardened criminal (which in turn increases recidivism).

Yes rapists and murders are bad but we're not supposed to stoop to their level dude. We're supposed to be the good guys and as good guys it's our job to be humane.

The length of a sentence is dependent on a lot of things. Sometimes, it's a matter of being a repeat offender. Granted, there are plenty of jurisdictions that are soft on crime, and it doesn't go well. There's a reason why parts of California have seen certain chains leave (like Walgreens and CVS), for example. If you go easy on theft, it just makes certain people more inclined to steal.

Harshness of a prison is not what leads to recidivism. Recidivism is largely a matter of not having many opportunities outside of prison once a sentence has ended. However, another factor is prison gangs. If more people were locked up in solitary, then gangs would be less of a problem in prisons, but unfortunately, certain activists in the legal system consider this "inhumane."

You may view it as stooping to their level, but I view it as efficient. You cannot get a sociopath or psychopath to like or respect you, but you can damn sure make them fear you. Fear is what is lacking among many criminal types. Granted, fear is not exclusively limited to being a tool of the state. One way criminals can fear the public more is to make it easier for people to arm and defend themselves.

Civilization relying on fear via hellish punishments to enforce harsh laws is hell on Earth Mac for 99% of a nation's citizens (basically everyone except for the rich).

Harshness in prisons is 100% a factor for recidivism. You make a hardened criminal from an inmate being treated like an animal for committing a low-level offense and you think he or she won't be inclined to commit a crime again?

Look up John Oliver's LastWeekTonight special on Solitary Confinment to see how ineffective it is. It is an antiquated practice invented by the puritans.

I highly doubt most inmates in state/federal prisons are sociopaths and psychopaths. In fact, most of them are probably just in prison for low-level offenses.

Hell on earth could also describe a society that goes light on crime while making it hard for people to legally defend themselves, which is the norm in much of California.

As far as low-level offenses go, you'll have to elaborate on that. Also, keep in mind that a lot of people in jail for drugs plea bargained down to the drug charge. Many of these same people committed violent crimes but were able to negotiate away certain charges. That's a nuance that many miss regarding the legal system.

The War on Drugs has plenty of flaws, but ultimately, drug charges themselves are sometimes more commonly used as leverage than as an actual attempt to stop drug use or trade. Plea bargaining is a complex aspect of our system that has flaws of its own.

HMM, something tells me one way or another he ain't going back to prison.
