Hi guys. Seems I'm in a bit of a mood over some recent experiences, and really just want to forget about stuff by posting some lighthearted, not-too-serious topics we can all have fun with.

We've had a lot of those "list your favorite bands" threads and such, but how dedicated are you to your one single favorite artist? How about the Top Ten songs, if you had to choose, from the band or artist you'd consider your favorite. Only one band or artist allowed, of course.

I guess I'll start. Well, everyone knows I'm the world's biggest Rush fan, and this list is harder than you'd think. With 17 studio albums alone over 33 years, such a list is to be limiting indeed. I could easily think of thirty Rush tunes that come into my head at any given time. But, if I had to list (in no particular order) the top ten...

Limelight (Moving Pictures)

The Big Wheel (Roll the Bones)

Available Light (Presto)

A Passage to Bangkok (2112)

Middletown Dreams (Power Windows)

Cygnus X-1, Book II - Hemispheres (Hemispheres)

The Enemy Within (Grace Under Pressure)

The Analog Kid (Signals)

Far Cry (Snakes and Arrows)

Here Again (Rush, the first album)

I could easily list about ten more in this same catagory of faves, but I guess those are my top ten. :triangle:

JUDAS PRIEST

1. "Dreamer Deceiver/Deceiver" --Sad Wings of Destiny

2. "Dissident Aggressor" --Sin After Sin

5. "The Rage" --British Steel

6. "Riding On The Wind" --Screaming For Vengeance

7. "Jawbreaker" --Defenders of the Faith

8. "Reckless" -- Turbo

9. "Painkiller" -- Painkiller

10. "Hellrider" / "Worth Fighting For" (tie...sorry) -- Angel of Retribution

...and I'm hearin' ya Dave....Rush are utter PHENOMS.

Yarg, this is a bitch of a question. I've got a lot of bands that I like and a lot of bands that I like a lot, but my favourites change as often as my moods do... If we're stuck with one single band and have to name albums then I'll go with Oasis, largely because I've been a fan of theirs for a long time even though I loathe pretty much everything they released after Be Here Now and they're not all that representative of my actual taste in music (insofar as I have any ^_^).

Actually bollocks to that, I've been into The Jam longer than Oasis, they have more than four albums to choose from, and I can squeeze in some of Paul Weller's solo stuff because he basically WAS The Jam and is your new god. So, The Jam it is :D

10. News Of The World (single)
9. English Rose (All Mod Cons)
8. When You're Young (single)
7. Strange Town (single)
6. The Modern World (This Is The Modern World)
5. The Eton Rifles (Setting Sons)
4. Town Called Malice (The Gift)
3. In The City (In The City)
2. Going Underground (single)
1. That's Entertainment (Sound Affects)

EDIT: As much as I love The Jam I've now got this nagging guilt that I didn't choose Led Zeppelin, Frank Zappa, Jimi Hendrix, Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, The Clash, The Sex Pistols, Rancid, The Arctic Monkeys, Oasis, Cast, Greenday, RATM, Rob Zombie or any of the other million and a half bands I love to death for my top ten. Damn you, Dave2112, and your rigorous stipulations!

Definitely not an easy task but here goes:

The Beatles

1) Hey Jude ("The Beatles: #1's"*, "Past Masters, Vol. II")

2) Let It Be ("Let It Be" album [heavy guitar solo], "Past Masters, Vol. II [single release with toned down guitar])

3) Something ("Abbey Road")

4) Come Together ("Abbey Road")

5) Sexy Sadie ("The White Album")

6) While My Guitar Gently Weeps ("The White Album")

7) Dear Prudence ("The White Album")

8) Strawberry Fields Forever ("Magical Mystery Tour")

9) Penny Lane ("Magical Mystery Tour")

10) Tomorrow Never Knows ("Revolver")

*Songs #1, 2, 3, 4 and 9 can all be found on the Beatles CD "#1's" which is a compilation of all of their #1 hits, hence the title.

Well, I don't have a favorite artist, persay. In terms of Rock & Roll, I think there were too many great bands to justify picking one. So, I'll bend the rules and make different top ten lists. The choices are tough enough to make as it is ;) ...

Led Zeppelin

1. 10 Years Gone (Physical Graffiti)
2. Dancing Days (Houses of the Holy)
3. Whole Lotta Love (Led Zeppelin II)
4. The Song Remains the Same (Houses of the Holy)
5. The Wanton Song (Physical Graffiti)
6. Carouselambra (In Through the Out Door)
7. Four Sticks (Led Zeppelin IV/Zoso)
8. The Ocean (Houses of the Holy)
9. For Your Life (Presence)
10. What Is and What Should Never Be (Led Zeppelin II)

I don't really have one definitive favourite band, but Candlemass definately is up there:

- Samarithan (Nightfall)
- At The Gallows End (Nightfall)
- Black Stone Wielder (Epicus Doomicus Metallicus)
- Mirror Mirror (Ancient Dreams)
- Crystal Ball (Epicus Doomicus Metallicus)
- Julie Laughs No More (Chapter VI)
- Dark Reflections (Tales Of Creation)
- Dark Are The Veils Of Death (Nightfall)
- The Well Of Souls (Nightfall)
- Solitude (Epicus Doomicus Metallicus)

Bon Jovi

Livin' on a prayer - (Slippery when wet)

So, The Jam it is :D

I love this song- one of my all-time favorites. Great choice, selecting the Jam, Headsnap.

6. Carouselambra (In Through the Out Door)

Damn, I never thought I'd see anyone bring up the exquisite Carouselambra. An old band of mine once actually did that song live, and it was a bitch as a keyboardist. Not that the song's that technically difficult on keys, but it's a lot of repetitive chord phrasings and syncopated, almost arpeggiated lines. All in a song that goes around, what, 9 minutes or so? We didn't play it for that long.

Nice choice.

Well, I knew I couldn't leave it alone with a band like Rush, with that incredible wealth of material. I do, however, stand by my Top Ten. These, on the other hand, are those that fall into a ten-place tie for 11th place...he he he...

2112 (2112)

Losing It (Signals)

Xanadu (A Farewell to Kings)

Grand Designs (Power Windows)

In The End (Fly By Night)

Vital Signs (Moving Pictures)

The Necromancer (Caress of Steel)

La Villa Strangiato (Hemispheres)

Between Sun and Moon (Counterparts)

By-Tor and the Snow Dog (Fly By Night)

In tribute to Dave.............my Rush list:

"The Camera Eye" -Moving Pictures
"Countdown"- Signals
"Working Man/Finding My Way" -All the World's a Stage
"Red Barchetta" -Moving Pictures
"A Farewell to Kings" - A Farewell To Kings
"Anthem" - Fly By Night
"Closer to the Heart" -A Farewell To Kings
"Xanadu" A Farewell To Kings
"Natural Science" -Permanent Waves

Pink Floyd

Entire Wish You Were Here LP

Shine On You Crazy Diamond 1-5
Welcome to the Machine
Have a Cigar
Wish You Were Here
Shine On 6-9

Flows like a dream from start to finish
Expertly performed with great emotion(s)
Play it on a gloomy/snowy day,a starlit night,or up high overlooking a nighttime city skyline can add greatly to its greatness!

Great call on "Countdown", Drew. That album came out shortly after the launch of the first Space Shuttle mission, and those of us who were around to witness it could easily relate to the magnificence of that song. Shuttles go up and down without us even noticing anymore, but back then, it was a species-defining event. Rush captured that emotion, and the song still brings me back to that moment. I guess that's how they've stayed so relevant after all these years, keeping up with the things that really matter to people.

Nice Zep list, TKLMAN. As a fan, I would also be hard pressed to pick ten.

My Zep list:

"Black Dog" - Led Zeppelin 4
"Houses of the Holy" - Physical Graffiti
"How Many More Years"- Led Zeppelin
"Bring it on Home" -Led Zeppelin 2
"Custard Pie" -Physical Graffiti
"Rock n Roll"(live version) -The Song Remains the Same soundtrack
"Misty Mountain Hop" Led Zeppelin 4
"Down By the Seaside" -Physical Graffiti
"The Ocean"- Houses of the Holy

Very cool, Dave! I would have liked to have played in your band :) . I love the song, but I never hear people talk about it. Owing to Bonham's death, I kind of see it as Led Zeppelin's swan song (if you'll excuse the expression :p ). The way they were able to assimilate the synths into what they do so seemlessly, kind of like the Who, is great. I think the keyboard lines that John Paul Jones came up with are fantastic and truly memorable (in 'The Crunge' and 'In the Light,' too- I'll assume they came from him). His bass lines sound great in this tune, too. Really, all the members do. Do you have a notion of what types of synths Jones was using?

On another silly note, there is a chord and specific voicing that Jimmy Page plays in the slow section which, to my ear, shows up again in the Firm song 'Together.' It's really striking, and not the sort of harmony you'd expect to hear in Rock & Roll.

I have two lists, one for mellow contemplative mood, one for rockin' out.

Both from da' boss, Bruce Springsteen.

Mellow/contemplative;

1-The Price You Pay
2-Wreck On The Highway
3-Point Blank
4-Atlantic City
5-My Home Town
6-Streets Of Philadelphia
7-Drive All Night
8-The River
9-Back Streets
10-Litle Girl

Rockin' OUT!

1-Born To Run
2-I'm A rocker
3-Ramrod
4-Glory Days
5-Jackson Cage
6-10th Avenue Freeze Out
7-Jungleland
8-Cadillac Ranch
9-Dancin' In The Dark
10-You Can Look (But You Better Not Touch!)

Dere's a reason why dey call him DA BOSS, brothers and sisters!

The music and the lyrics really talk to me. :rotate: :rotate: :rotate:
