Sneaking up on people?

Yep, that happens to me with some frequency. It really amps up the ticklish response for there suddenly to be fingers scampering up your sides where you thought there was nobody. Exaggerated twisting and writhing ensue on my part, along with sharp, more-hysterical-than-usual giggles. This is unfortunate as it makes the whole spectacle even more entertaining than usual for the tickler (and onlookers) and makes it even more likely that she will continue.

I think it's absolutely adorable.
When somebody does it to me, I always end up on the floor.

Part of what's so discombobulating about the experience, for the person being tickled, is the sudden, seismic shift in context: one moment you're talking to friends or colleagues, or reading something, or waiting for something at the printer; the next, abruptly, you're twisting spasmodically and emitting a cascade of shrieking giggles. The suddenness of that loss of control over oneself is disarming (and embarrassing; the sharp contrast also provides a humorous spectacle for onlookers). It's like your entire body's control panel has been hijacked by a few of your twitchiest nerve endings, and because you didn't see it coming -- didn't even know, in fact, that you were in a playful or teasing moment -- your rational mind doesn't even have the chance to try to intervene -- your reaction is unfiltered, unmitigated, and a product of pure physicality.
