An example of double rounding error:
An exact cost is $17,499.66.
The accountant has been instructed to round off to the nearest dollar for daily reports and so rounds it off to $17,500.
Two months later, the comptroller is working on the annual report, in which all figures are in thousands, and so rounds that off to $18K.
