I open this thread by apologizing to the mods if this thread is in the wrong place. I didnt know whether to put it in tech support.. or here.. because it isn't a TMF issue, but.. I have a virus scanner situation that is really weird.

I may have posted how sometime ago, my Avast virus scanner turned from a blue ball icon.. to an orange ball icon. During that time.. the virus scan, which used to scan a certain amount of files.. and then stop scanning, and say "testing finished".. would continue to reset itself, and constantly scan.. never stopping. Yet, in spite of this.. virus updates continued to be downloaded to my computer, after a brief period which had said that the virus updates were unable to be downloaded to my computer.

Today, for the first time.. in .. months.. when I came home, my virus scanner had done a full scan, in the old method,..of about 100,000 files, and then stopped, saying. "Testing finished".. just like it used to before the problem with the repeated scans started. While the computer had been doing the repeated, non stop scans, I contacted Avast on several occasions, and was unable to resolve the issue.

I'm fairly certain that I have the latest version of Avast.. and the latest downloads, on my computer.. so.. my question is... would anyone have an idea why my computer was doing non stop virus scans.. literally for months, and now suddenly,, it reverted back to the old way.. of scanning a certain amount of files, and then stopping its scan.

Are there any forum members who have Avast virus scanners.. and if so.. has anyone experienced the issues I've been having? My computer seems to be working, knock on wood.. but I'm just confused as to why the virus scanner would be doing non stop scans for months, and then suddenly revert back to the old way of scan a certain amount of files, and then stop, without warning or explanation.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Mitch

I don't know much about computers. Just that I used to use an HP scanner until about two years ago when I bought a Canon system that was a scanner, printer, and fax all in one.

Okay, thanks, Cheri. Actually, the title of my thread is probably incorrect. It probably should say "Antivirus software issue" I was typing fast, and probably titled the thread incorrectly.

Mitch

Sometimes anti virus scanners go ape shit for no reason. Go to your settings and make sure it is set to scan when you want it to.

If that doesn't solve the problem try reinstalling the software. If all of that fails, send them an email.

Thanks, Leo. Avast works a bit differently than most scanners, in that it does a virus scan every time the computer goes into screensaver.

When I've emailed them, they have been of little help. I'm a bit afraid to reinstall the software.. because I'm afraid while I do so.. I may pick up a virus.

Thanks again for the advice. I'll see if I get any more replies, and think it over.

Ditch Avast and get Spyware Doctor with IntelliGuard. Update the software daily and scan for viruses at least once a week. Problem solved.

I'm not sure I like that idea. I used to have Norton which scanned once a week, and I got viruses far more often.

Thanks for the suggestion anyway.

How do you pick up so many viruses? I have no virus protection or even a firewall and I only get maybe about 1 virus a year.

Every 6 months or so I just reformat Windows for the fuck of it to keep it running well. It's an XP from '04 or '05... so it's pretty fucking ancient.

That you know of.

It's exceptionally likely that you have tons and tons of mostly benign viruses if you literally don't even have windows basic firewall enabled.

As long as they don't bother me and aren't stealing shit, I don't really care. Back when I was like 15 I designed viruses (basic ones) so I know a little about how most of them work.

However that adware that wanted me to buy virus protector 200 or whatever I had a while ago was a pain.

I was told by a tech who fixed this comp, who saw my browsing history, and knows I belong to fetish forums, that fetish forums have viruses. Please understand, mods, that I am NOT accusing the TMF forum of having viruses. This is just what this particular tech told me.

My comp is even more ancient then yours, Leo, a Dell with Windows XP from May 2002, but, as long as it runs, I'm going to use it. If this thing blows, I'm going to get a laptop, I think.

He was surely talking about large porn search hubs, which are full of malware and downloads and spyware of all sorts.

The TMF is just a small, relatively secure website. I'm sure it's not what he meant when he said "fetish forums."

Large porn hubs are full of them, yes. Some forums that aren't secure are full of them. I picked up my little treat a while back from a video game console hacking forum.

TMF is for the most part secure since most of the advertising comes from internal members versus outside sources that usually contain harmful threats.

I dont go to large porn search hubs, just TMF, Wus foot fetish forums, and a couple of other fetish forums occasionally.

I use Kaspersky for my anti-virus software. It's pretty good and it's programmable as to how invasively it polices your computer.

I've never heard of "Avast," myself. But if I were going to pirate that software, I know what my advertising slogan would be.

Yep. You got it...

"AVAST, YE LUBBERS!" :laughhard: :rowfull:
