As a baseball fanatic, and addict, I am very depressed at the thought of another strike.
That being said, it is a very bizarre labor dispute, in that the players (workers) are ready to strike to preserve unrestricted capitalism, while the owners (management) are adamant in demanding socialist practices. In particular, what the owners want is revenue sharing, and a payroll tax (which they call a luxury tax) of 50% on all payrolls above $100 million.
So if George Steinbrenner, to name one owner, wishes to spend $200 million of his own (and his partners') money on a bunch of superstars in 2003, the owners are in favor of taxing him $50 million for the privilege. They are in favor of sharing the revenue he generates thereby with the small-market teams. The players say, let George spend his own money any way that he wishes (short of breaking the law) in his own business.
While hoping that there is no strike, I would have to say that I support the players' position over the owners'.
