This summer Austin endured 80 almost consecutive days of 100 + temperatures, shattering the old record of 65 days set in 1925. Sunday night it was like someone flipped a switch. When I walked out the door Monday it was 60 degrees. I felt like I needed a light jacket but it was great. This week the highs have been in the low 90's. Sounds hot but with very low humidity it's very nice.
The welcome respite from the heat has been wonderful, but marred by the horrible wildfires and loss of life in Bastrop County. Now, we need rain, and a lot of it. Not all at once of course, just nice soaking showers every other day or so. So many farmers and ranchers here have been devastated by the drought. Many of these are older men and women who don't have the decades it can take to rebuild their business. If they don't have family willing and able to take over they will likely have to liquidate and give up their way of life. So very sad...
