Greetings one and all! In my continuing effort to create some interesting things for us to do in GenDis, I've come to remember how many threads we've had about music and classic rock in particular. So, I took 20 of the greatest classic rock bands of all time (just bands, no solo artists) and created a bracket for head-to-head voting.

Each thread will be put up with a poll where you can vote on your choice between two bands. The winner will be bumped up to the next bracket. I have it all on paper, so I'll have everything kept track of. Each round will last a couple of days, depending on my schedule. So, get your vote out early!

With all of the distraction of this little national election we have going, why not have a fun diversion? After it's all over, we'll have had a little fun and have an official winner among our little community.

The first round pits two bands from the same era, but with completely different styles. Vote now for your choice between....

The Doors

or

Creedence Clearwater Revival

This thread will remain open for a couple of days (I'll play with it a bit and see how long it takes us to get a useable amount of votes), and then be closed after the final vote tally. Then, we'll move on to the next one.

Have fun! And may the best band win!

I voted for CCR.
An original sound, great storytelling songs. Everything you could want.
It rocked when it had to, and was slow when it needed to be.

Easy pick for me.

I went with The Doors myself. I liked CCR, but they've always been one of those "when I'm in the mood for them" kinda bands. Speaking only for myself, after awhile, CCR had a kind of sameness about them. The Doors just created something completely new.

At least for the first ten rounds where the bands are matched up initially, I tried to keep bands together with something tying them together. (Can't wait to see the results for the Beatles/Stones poll when we get that far).

CCR and the Doors both had very short careers (less than five years) and had more "best of", live and re-releases than studio albums, but released material that has stood the test of time, and became iconic within their own particular kinds of sound. That's the tie-in between these two.

Remember folks, you don't have to post...just vote! Let's get a lot of votes for these. It doesn't take any longer to vote than it did to click open this thread.

I too went with The Doors. For one, I just like their style better. They had a nice blend of keyboards and guitar that I didn't see present in CCR. Also, a lot of people don't realize that the Doors did not have a bass guitar player. The keyboardist played all of the bass with foot pedals, in addition to his keyboard responsibilities. That always impressed the hell out of me.

CCR was great, too. A lot of their music had an R&B quality to it that was very appealing. I've got nothing bad to say about them, and I can certainly understand anybody voting for them. But given the choice, I had to go with the Doors.

Great idea 🙂

I voted for The Doors as well.

Unlike most of you guys I'm not a musician myself, so I can't come up with explanations, why I like them better than CCR, I just do. Hope, that's ok as well 😉

CCR hands down for me, never got into The Doors or Jim Morrison's antics..though I do like a few tunes of theirs.

The Doors for me for sure. CCR was fine, in a driving the car, rocking along, not paying attention kind of way. But The Doors- now they were a melt into your beanbag chair and listen kind of band.

Don't put The Doors up against Pink Floyd or my brain will explode.

Gotta go with CCR on this one. I used 'Travelling Band' in a soundtrack for a school project. 😀

I went with The Doors, there was just nobody else like them at the time.

I went with CCR.

The only Doors song I like is Crystal Ship. After that, I tend to see them as an over-hyped drug band. I think my bias is-more or less- based on my highschool experiences. The "musically inclined" kids tended to gravitate toward Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, and Jimi Hendrix. Who, incidentally, died young from lots of drugs.

Of course, none of those kids ever thought to worship the likes of Steve Vai, Eddie Van Halen, or Angus Young. I guess they were just "talentless squares."🙄

Gotta go with The Doors, CCR was great also, but I think The Doors just had an overall better sound, and were an overall better, and more innovative band. Both bands however affected music history.

Just took a look at the way the brackets are set up. After the initial rounds are done, I don't have any control over who's matched up with who. However, the only way the Doors and Pink Floyd could be matched up would be in the final vote. I just happen to have them on opposite ends of the brackets.

Interesting to read people's comments on their choices. Gives a lot of insight in to folks' tastes.

The Doors, Jim Morrison is the cat's meow and had some voice also. He was the Doors, without him they didn't exist. Although Kitty could say the same about CCR, without John Fogarty they were nothing.

Interesting face-off. The eclectic Doors, with their urban oriented themes and sound, against CCR, whose music and lyrics are more in tune with the rural population. I have greatest hits albums from both bands, and the main difference is CCR's has more than twice the songs, and all were heard prominently on mainstream radio at the time. Gotta stick with CCR.

I can't believe The Doors are beating Creedence.

That is straight up garbage.

The Doors suck. Frick'n "Lizard King"? Come on... Morrison never wanted to be a rock star, but gave himself that name and acted like a fool on stage. Not to mention the strange poetry and then the bubble-gum pop songs like "Light My Fire." Made no sense to me...

CCR's "Fortunate Son" blows anything by the Doors out of the water, I think.

Well, it looks like The Doors win Round One. 16-10.

Remember, each thread is only gonna be up for a couple of days, so get your votes in for each round if you want your band to win! (And, so we can blow through this quick!)

Check this subforum for Round Two which should be up in about three...two...one....
