I've used those. They're dodgy. I don't even see them anymore. They scan like poo and aren't fast at all. I don't think I ever used one without a manager coming over and trying to figure out what was wrong with it.
 
When I first got to use these, I got excited, until the machine's weight-detection security pissed me off, telling me I was putting the wrong object into the bag because I dropped it too hard. Eventually, I got it down to a science and the computer and I were able to keep the same pace without speedbumps (which still isn't as fast as a regular, skilled cashier, but it can beat waiting in line for one of those.).

Unfortunately, it seems like I always get stuck behind the people who HAVEN'T mastered the device's nuances, and I find that I get equally frustrated by the technology-hating, elder employees they entrust swipe-cards to for helping these people out.
 
Using those is a bit like driving a mini all your life and suddenly swapping it for an articulated lorry. Personally, I've never had any trouble, but the number of times I've seen people get physically violent with them is unreal 😀
 
I for one am thankful that the supermarkets are finally catering to the needs of misanthropes. Not having to talk to, look at, or even be in the presence of other human beings whilst purchasing a months'-worth of microwave meals and my copy of Loner Weekly is absolutely fantastic.

But the annoying thing is, I still need to talk to someone to buy my Cutters Choice and Silver Slims. 😡
 
Yes that is a pickle. Luckily they haven't yet seen the need to put the Buy One Get One Free Jaffa Cakes behind the ciggie desk.
 
They're great at the local supermarket, but the ones at IKEA are shitty and always freeze on you. You're forced to call one of the reps and they look at you like you've broken something. Bitches.
 
I helped install a bunch at my local Wal Mart about 6-7 years ago. It was when people were first beginning to see them (in the states at least) and I remember thinking about how many jobs those replaced.
