i have this best friend. i met him in the ctv chatroom and we connected. we talk on msn and once on the phone. he is a viet nam vet and a recovering addict. he once spent twenty thousand dollars on cocaine and alcohol in one week last year. well he quit. i have been helping him with the impending death of his brother and his best companion. they lived together. all last summer and this fall i was there for support. two weeks ago tomorrow his brother died. well to make a long story short, last night my friend fell off the wagon. he told me he was drinking rum and mixing it with morphine that was his brothers. today i havent heard a thing from him and havent seen him online at all, which is totally weird because as a disabled vet, he spends much time on his computer. i tried calling both his home and cell number, no answer. i was told that this combination can be deadly. how do i find out if he is alive or not? i'm not sure i know his last name. and his mom is alive but i dont know her name at all. i am so worried that just a while ago i went upstairs and cried and cried. can someone help me ? i need a way to find out if he is alive or not.

Aside from sending him a letter (if you have his address) then i dont think theres much you can do.

i dont have his address. i just hope he told his mom about me, as he told his brother. maybe she will contact me...

I don't have any advice to give you, given how little info. you have to work with. But, he'll be in my prayers.

Actually, there IS one thing I can think of. Have you contacted one another via e-mail at all? If so and you can forward an e-mail to me, we can pull and trace IP info. and see if it turns up anything. (I'd ignore the content of the e-mail and just check the necessary info.)

Ann

i sent you a pm, Ann with his email addy. thanks much

isabeau

Wow, Isabeau, I hope he's all right. If you find out he is, Ann, please let us know. 🙁

Lord above, I hope he is ok. I am so sorry hon that you are going through this. If you need anything, let me know.

I do belive hun there is way to get a receipt to see if someone has recieved an email from you. This is one way you can see if your friend is still ok. I have included the instructions below. I hope this helps. I will include your friend in my prayers.
-----------------------------------------------------
To be notified when your outgoing messages are received

You can set up Outlook Express to display a receipt for e-mail you send. The receipt is sent when the message recipient has displayed your message. This is useful when you are sending time-critical information, or any time you want confirmation that your message has been received.

To request a receipt for individual messages

In the new message window, on the Tools menu, click Request Read Receipt.
To request a receipt for all messages

On the Tools menu, click Options.
On the Receipts tab, select the Request a read receipt for all sent messages check box.
Note

Message recipients can choose not to send read receipts, even when they are requested. If you do not want to send receipts, on the Tools menu, click Options. On the Receipts tab, select a Returning Read Receipts option.

Isabeau, Iam very sorry to hear this, hun. I dont know what to add in the way of advice, other than what Ann and the others already said. All I can say is that if you need to talk, you know you can pm me or contact me anytime, and I will be there for you. Your friend is in my prayers. I pray that he is okay.

Mitch

thank you amk, kurchy, aechean and mitchell. i still havent heard a thing, however i do know his address and last name now. for you who answered and gave sympathy and advice thanks. frankly im a bit hurt, i have taken time out to give plenty of advice to people here, and expected maybe a bit more response. o well. kurch i'll try that thanks for taking the time to type all of that

Isabaeu if you talked to him on the phone you can call your local police to have that number traced and they can forward that address to his local police and have them check on him cause your worried about his safety, it may work out also were they can help get him in a program to help him with his addiction. I hope this is of some help and your friend is ok.

thank you deuce. and let me make something clear. he didnt get the morphine illegally it was his by rights. i was worried that people here would think he stole it or something. its just that combining it with alcohol is dangerous. thanks deuce🙂

If you know enough about him to have a location then maybe a check of the local Veterans groups, a V.A. Hospital, in addition to the local authorities, may be helpful as well.
That does seem to be the catch w/ this Cyber-World we've built here...the bare bones :Names, Addresses, Locations etc. are left out more often than not and we who are in a worried state such as you are left w/ very little hard info to go on.
My Heart & Prayers go out to you and your friend.

Isabeau I didn't mean to make it sound like he stole it I guess I was looking at it the same way you were and that's not a good mixture and I understood your concern with mixing them.

You can contact emergency services (such as the local police) in his city and explain the situation. Give them his phone number - they have the resources to get the address from that. They should be more than willing to send someone over to check on him.

Yes, this could get him arrested on drug charges if he's telling the truth about having morphine around the house. But better that than dead.

the cops found him and placed him in the hospital. now he is home. thanks

isabeau

I'm glad you found him, isabeau. I hope he feels better soon.

Mitch

thank you Mitch i hated to ask in here, but i figure we are friends here and help each other. i found that out first hand with Ann what a friend she is. and he is fine now. spent all day yesterday in the hospital and has gotten rid of the morphine.

isabeau

i had also called a few friends of mine who gave good suggestions. but appreciate all the help here xoxo

a bit off topic and soz about that, but this thread ... it's ironic ... lately I've been wondering if any of my IRL friends would wonder if I suddenly dropped off the radar screen ...??

...tis the season ...??

I'm glad to hear all is well isabeau and yeah as a community I think it's great we all like to agure and tease but when it comes down to a time when you need help there are so many more then willing to lean a hand

Thank goodness he's alive and well, or at least recovering from the binge he went on, and doesn't have the morphine anymore. He's lucky to have a friend like you, Isabeau. Try to keep in touch with him, and let him know you're there if he needs help in the future. Take care now. 🙂
