i watched again Pirates of the Caribbean last night on USA.. with Johnny Depp...hubba hubba sighs sighs.. oops digressing sorry.. well anyway, the unique way he portrayed Capt. Jack Sparrow had me wondering if that was his idea or the directors.. It reminded me of Marlon Brando in "Mutiny on the Bounty" in which he played Fletcher Christian in his own way, and also Val Kilmer in "Tombstone" as Doc Holliday, playing him as no one else ever played him... did Johnny do this on his own, or was he directed to act it that way? and btw i loved how he portrayed that Captain..

It was jonny's. He said he made his character out as a cross between Keith Richards and Pepe Le Pew.

pepe le pew??? lolololol.. thanks Dussicar.. i forgot i knew that about keith richards..

i believe it was all johnny depp. and to think, he was once on "21 jump street" (showed my age on that one dammit). i agree his portrayal as capt. jack sparrow is awesome, focused on the task yet a smart ass as well......admirable qualities, indeed.........and val kilmer as doc holliday was a classic as well, one of my favorites ........ :imouttahe

Its a long standing American tradition, feeble attempts at foreign accents. The most outstanding contribution to the genre being the unforgettable Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins.

Ah - but see, Jack's not really English. This all takes place near English colonies, yes, but not England. Jack could've been born in the American colonies. Or in the African ones. Or the Indian ones. Or the Austrialian ones. Or born and raised on a pirate ship surrounded not just by English pirates, but French ones, African ones, Indian ones, South America ones, etc. So his accent shouldn't be pure English. Unlike Dyke's over-blown cockney, Depp's doing a fine job doing the accent of someone who might not be really English born and raised.

.....nice try lurker.....but no cigar.
This from the recognized authority on accents of the Caribbean during the 18th century. Concede the point, Lurker, lest he hoist his Jolly Roger and broadside ye! Arrrrrrrrrr! :evilha: (besides, she's obviously more of a pipe girl, rather than cigars)

Is it me..or is his portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow very similar to his Hunter S. Thompson from Fear and Loathing?

But who says Jack's from the Caribbean either? He could be from anywhere in the world. England had colonies all over the place. He could be from anywhere. His accent does not have to be Caribeanian either.

I won't conceed the point because Jack has never once said he was born and raised in those waters - and even if he did, he could be lying. For all we know, Jack could've been raised in Holland!

Caribeanian?

I can definitely see where you'd get that from, but I see enough differences to disagree, too. Good point, though. Gonna hafta go and watch them both back-to-back now, LoL!

Exactly! (And yes, I know I can't spell worth a darn. I'm sure I'm spelling colonies wrong. But as long as people get my point.)

Seriously, Jack could've just as easily been born and raised on a pirate ship full of people with all sorts of accents. It would make sense for him to have a muddled accent.

In the end Depp could've played Sparrow with any sort of accent he wanted. He could've choosen to base Sparrow's accent on Boris from Rocky & Bullwinkle if he wanted. "Captain Jack Sparrow, looking for moose and squirel."

Johnny worked with Marlin in Don Juan Demarco (EXCELLENT film if you havent seen it)...

He studied a lot under Brando and said in an interview that indeed a lot of Sparrow came from Bounty....(with a few twists of course).....

Depp has always been one of my favorite actors.... 😎

I love Captain Jack Sparrow (thank you, Dan, for correcting these heathens). I still don't see the relationship between him and Pepe Le Pew however. 🙂

*doffs his feathered tricorner hat with a flourish, in a sweeping bow*
"Tis surely my very great pleasure, milady!"

I saw the interview where they talked with him about his influences on this character's development, and when it came to Pepe Le Pew, I found his answer ambiguous and kind of evasive. I don't see the connection myself, either, so don't feel too badly.

My guess is that when asked for influences, he pulled Pepe Le Pew right out of his arse (figuratively speaking of course) and then couldn't defend it.

T'was my very theory as well, me bonnie lass! (and pirate smilies, too, dammit!)

I did quite a bit of work with the renaissance faires in Texas and got to really know quite a few characters. In "Pirates..." Depp's character really reminds me of some of the pirates at faire too. I wonder if he was at all inspired by Faire circuit actors too?

Well, another reason I think that is because in the commentary for Fear and Loathing, Johnny mentions that he not only felt very comfortable playing the Raoul Duke character, but that he still feels like that persona is a part of him.
Also, check out the newest Rolling Stone. The headline reads: Gonzo Pirate.

It seems strange that the movie is rated PG-13...

I had assumed that it would be rated "ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!"

Probably because like Pepe, Sparrow has a tendancy to chase a woman who doesn't want him.
