During the rush hour this morning, 10 bombs exploded almost simultaneously in suburban trains on their way to Madrid, the Spanish capital. So far, over 190 dead and over 1000 injured persons have been counted. It's the worst terrorist attack in Spain's history.
The government blames the Basque separatist organization "ETA" for the attack, as the used explosives are typical for ETA bombs. However, nobody has yet declared responsibility for the bombing.
ETA is the militant branch of the Basque Separation Party "Herri Batasuna", whose political branch has recently been outlawed. They have tried to get independence for the Basque Province in nortnern Spain for several decades and have committed countless attacks on Spanish police and government; only recently they started to attack civilians. The Basque separatists feel oppressed by the Spanish government.
Most probably, this attack must be seen on the background of parliamentary elections on Sunday 03/14/04. The Spanish prime mininster Mr. Aznar has declared 3 days of state mourning, and all election campaigns have been suspended.
