Since one does not exist, this is the place to post anything and everything you deem necessary in regards to the Winter Olympics!

I'll start off by saying I'm soo glad that Alex Bilodeau won the gold medal in the men's moguls.

a) That first jump was SICK!!! 720 backflip with loads of air and he stuck the landing!!! DAMN!!!

b) The first Gold Medal won by a Canadian at an Olympic Games on Canadian Soil = instant history book material

c) He dedicated his games to his brother, who has cerebral palsy and I heard a rumour he was gonna attempt to smuggle his brother onto the podium with him for the medal ceremony. Now that just reeks of outright class and honour!

:ty: Alex and let's :gbtoast:, CANADA GOT THE GOLD ON HOME SOIL, FINALLY!!!

As of 1pm on Day 4, Canada has:

1 Gold (Men's Moguls)
1 Silver (Women's Moguls)
1 Bronze (Women's 3000m speed skate)
1 Olympic Record (Largest point difference in a single hockey game; Women's hockey, 18 - 0 vs. Slovakia)

In comparison, Sweden has:

1 Gold (Facial Hair)
1 World Record (Most time spent in Silly Stuff Forum)

That is all.

It's rude to embarrass your guests 18-0 when you're the host country. 😱

The Slovakia Women's National Ice Hockey team defeated Belarus 82-0 during qualifications for the 2010 Olympics.

Not disagreeing that Hockey are the two medals that define the Winter Olympics. See you at the podium man! :wavingguy

Actually, they talked about this. One of the reasons they keep it 8 teams at the Olympics instead of letting the six big countries (Canada, USA, Russia, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland) duke it out is to promote Women's Hockey in other countries. Not showing at the Olympics will cause those countries (Slovakia, China, Bulgaria, etc) to cut funding from women's hockey programs. It would kill women's hockey in those countries instead of encouraging them to develop.

As well, while it was a one-sided victory, it was far from rude. The crowd was cheering the Slovakian women when they made good plays and showed competitive spirit. In Torino in 2006, Canada beat Italy 16 - 0. The Italian women said afterwards that their goal was to lose to Canada by less than 20 goals, which they did. They said it they were pleased with their performance and that it was an honour just to be on the ice with Canada.

Incidently, the USA beat China yesterday 12 - 1. The US didn't let up the pressure for the game and, when asked about it, the Chinese said that they wouldn't have wanted the Americans to. They would have felt more insulted that the US played a half-assed game than if they lost 100 - 0. In fact, they were thrilled with their performance with the fact that they scored a goal against an international powerhouse like the US.

While I agree that one-sided scores are not exactly nice to see, when kept in the perspective of the international scene and not just 'winning the tournament', they are going to be part of the game. A sad, but true fact.

Anyway, Canada is currently failing terribly at the men's downhill skiing and my drawing pad is getting cold. Later!

Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh

Our only portuguese athlete already went into action.

He managed to finish "the last" on cross country or something like that.....well...at least with a name like Danny, we can allways say he is not trully portuguese 🙁 🙁 🙁

On the bad side...he does have my family name 🙁 what a disgrace!!!!!!

We should stick with summer sports!!!!!

I agree with Mils, actually... You can bet Don Cherry will have a few comments about it, lol 😉

LMAO! 😀 It's gonna be damn close, that's for sure! Just about EVERY team in this tournament is stacked! :scared: But... Canada will prevail :woot:

Olympics have been a lot of fun to watch so far, but there's been some glaring if not down right embarrassing screw ups so far too...

1) The Luge track - The way that whole situation has been handled has been attrocious, IMO. Events should have been bumped at the very least to survey the best course of action. Clearly NONE of the athletes are impressed with the shortened track as was grossly evident in the Women's competition last night... starting from the Juniors? They've all practised from their regular start and watching them all scramble to adjust to the new start was hard to watch... and a lot of damning comments.

2) "Own the Podium" and VANOC - This whole approach has left a lot of teams grumbling and with good reason. Limiting practise runs? You can argue such an approach contributed to that young man's death on Friday :sowrong: It's poor sportsmanship, IMO... and as you could see from the Alpine events yesterday, it didn't make a damn bit of difference to the outcome.

3) Richmond OVal (Speed Skating) - Are you telling me we can't find a functional zamboni? :wow:

4) The fence around the Olympic Cauldron - No one can get close to the damn thing and the fence is an eye sore... IOC is pressuring VANOC to do the right thing and make it more accessible for the thousands of grumbling tourists hoping for a nice picture to take home with them.

But it has been mostly positive so far... it's a thrilling time for Canada and I hope the Games come to a much more successful conclusion than the way they've got started 😀

Go Canada! :canada:

It's rude to embarrass your guests 18-0 when you're the host country. 😱

Yeah, we should play nice and let the USA or Russia get the Home Ice advantage when we play them for the gold SURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRE!!!

It's even worse to embarrass yourself by declaring the 200 MT dash record holder the worlds fastest man just because the guy from Canada kicked your guys ass in the 100 MT dash. Especially when the 200 MT guys gets hammered in a 150 MT dash by our guy.

Oh, and how about how all the American TV channels cut off our boys getting the metals in Salt Lake City on 2002. Not very cool at all. I don't believe that has happened on Canadian Television. Less we forget the crying the coach for said team did after he learned there had been a Canadian 1 Dollar coin (currently in the hockey hall of fame) had been stuck to the cement under the ice. WOW talk about rude. I am sure I could find more examples but my arms are getting tired from beating you with the Canadian flag.

:bow2::bow2::bow2:

Never question Canadian Politeness, because you will always get crushed.

Maelle Ricker just took Gold for Canada in Women's snowboardcross! :headbang:

VANOC has requested the propane powered Zamboni from the Calgary Olympic Oval be sent over. It's packed up and now on its way.

Canada has successfully crushed the dread Norwegians. May we have our Gold now please?

Okay, after seeing the first game for each team in hockey, I have come to the following predictions:

Women's final will be Canada vs. USA. The winner will be whomever shows up with the better netminder. Either way, it will be a close game, won by a single goal, in regulation. Just because I'm feeling rather cynical, I'm saying:
USA Gold
Canada Silver
Finland Bronze

Men's final will be between Russia and Canada. Sweden struggled against GERMANY, scoring only two goals. The USA is coming together too slowly to make the Gold Medal game. Russia and Canada seem to have it together instantly, assuming their coaches see what we all saw in the last two days. Both Luongo and Nabokov looked a tad shaky, but Brodeur and Bryzgalov are in the wings. I think that it will come down to the play of the defense, which Canada will have the edge (did you see Doughty???).
Canada Gold
Russia Silver
Sweden Bronze (Sorry Carsomyr)

Word.

Sweden struggled against GERMANY, scoring only two goals.

Just some quick notes: (edit: ok, disregard the "just" and "quick" parts XD) Germany actually has a lot of NHL-players, and a very skilled goalie. Furthermore, I think it was the Germans that played really well, and not so much the Swedes struggling. I admit that I had expected one or two more goals (I had expected something like a 4-1 win), but Germany has a LOT of character in their team, and doesn't give up like other "B-nations" do when they're trailing with a couple of goals against the top countries.

Forsberg looked GREAT, and should have had a goal as well as a couple of assists. Franzen also silenced all my doubts conserning his injury, and Modin looked solid. I still hate the fact that we have Magnus Johansson on the team, but he won't see a lot of ice time later in the tournament.

All in all, I was pleasantly surprised. 🙂 I had only expected a little more from Hornqvist and Weinhandl, but they will hopefully click better on their lines in the next game, seeing as the team has only been practicing together for some 3 days or so. Takes time to develop chemistry, ya know!

That said, I do not contest that the odds favour Canada and Russia. Luckily the tournament isn't decided "on paper", but on the ice. :devil2: If any team has a shot at an "upset" in the final, it's :sweden: 😀

And screw it, I'll post my own predictions and analyzes into the pot as well, just like Snail Shell. 😛

Women's Hockey

Ok I hate to say it, but even as a hockey fan I don't care much for this tournament. It's a race for the gold between Canada and the US anyway, but that's not my only issue with it. I understand that, at least in Canada, Women's Hockey is treated as something that's very separate from Men's Hockey... But in Sweden, female athletes are very keen on comparing themselves to their male counterparts, so I can't help but do the same: A STAR player like Hayley Wickenheiser has actually been testing out "Division 1", the third-tier mens league in Sweden. Even though that's dangerously close to being a beer-league (as in the difference in physique shouldn't be THAT great, so pure skill should be more of a factor), Wickenheiser was still not useful as anything other than a plugger. Now, Wickenheiser is leaps and bounds better than anyone on team Sweden, or any other team except the US for that matter. The players on Team Sweden or Team Finland wouldn't survive in Division 2, or even Division 3, and then we're REALLY talking beer-leagues! The quality of play in the couple of Women's games I've watched during this Olympics has been so soul-crushingly bad, that I'm completely done with the tournament already.

For me hockey is about being the best, and while it's fair enough to watch Women's Hockey to see who gets the gold, I just can't take it seriously when Team Sweden gets pounded by a bunch of male Canadian 15- and 16-year-olds in an exhibition game before the tournament, with the coach actually saying that he's happy they managed to "keep the score down so well". But eh, I'll post my predictions anyway just for the hell of it:

Gold: Canada (Because it's Canada, and the tournament is played in Canada.)
Silver: USA (Because they're the only other legit Women's Hockey nation.)
Bronze: Toss-up between Sweden and Finland. I'll say Sweden, because sometimes our goaltender doesn't completely suck.

Edit: And for the record I don't want to come off as if I'm hatin' on Women's Hockey, but it SERIOUSLY needs to be improved before I'll start watching it on a regular basis. I'm sure Wickenheiser might still have been held back by physical aspects when she played over here, but there's nothing wrong with Women's Hockey in North America. It's over here in Europe that it BADLY needs to see improvements, because as it is now it's just... sad. Although it's still hockey, it's not even fun to watch. :-/

Men's Hockey

Ah, now that's better. :woot: Canada was off to a good start, and it's good that their stars got to score some points early on even though a big win against Norway doesn't say much. Norway stood up well for 1 period, but superior physique by the Canadians probably ran up the score a bit when the Norwegians were too tired to compete anymore.

The US has a young, but promising team. They looked pretty good against Switzerland, and a 3-1 win certainly isn't shabby by any means - especially if you consider the way Switzerland played in 2006 where they actually shut out Canada in a 2-0 win. The US definitely has potential to medal!

Russia was off to the same start as Canada: Their stars delivered against inferior opposition, but again, an inflated score against such a weak team doesn't say much.

Finland faced off against slightly tougher opposition than Canada or Russia, but Belarus actually looked extremely tame and uninspired in that game. Good for Finland to grab a win right away, but we probably won't see for sure where they stand until they face off against Sweden.

Sweden in turn did just enough to win their first game. Overall the team looks strong, but it has some weak links such as Johansson, and the fact that they only have one really good goaltender. That should still be enough though, assuming Lundqvist doesn't break. My personal doubts about Forsberg, Modin and Franzen have been erased though, as I mentioned in my post above. Germany is right up there with Switzerland in my mind, so a 2-0 win is just as good as the American's 3-1 win, though I'd rather have that shutout with the same goal differential, instead of one more goal scored.

The Czech Republic had an "ok" game, even though they won. They can do better, however, and beating Slovakia quite frankly isn't as prestigeous as it was, perhaps 6 or 7 years ago. No offense if any Slovakians read this, but I don't even consider them a top 7 nation anymore. They have some stars, but their depth is abysmal. The Czechs can definitely step up their play a couple of notches, but at the same time they have "proven" more with this win than any other top nation so far.

I'm not bold enough to make any predictions about the medals, because it looks extremely open to me, even though Canada and Russia certainly has an edge. But I'll post my "power rankings":

1a. Canada
1b. Russia
2. Sweden
3. Czech Republic
4a. USA
4b. Finland
5a. Slovakia
5b. Switzerland
5c. Germany
6. Belarus
7. Norway
8. Latvia

Also, if you read this far then I salute you! 😀 XD

Women:
Gold - USA
Silver - Canada
Bronze - Finland

Men:
Gold - Canada
Silver - Russia
Bronze - Chuck Norris

That's right, Sweden is held off the podium in hockey at this Olympics!
