Was curious if any of us was into 3d printing? Over the course of the last year it's become one of my interests... seeing what parts you can make from filament.

I've always been artistic, but visually/ crafty I was not. But trying to teach myself CAD/ modeling like I learned how to use music stuff ages ago? This is my loop to get in.

As this thread goes, if it develops, I'll share a bit more.

I don't know anything about 3D printing, but just the fact that it exists kinda blows my mind. There again, anything more complicated than Lego tends to blow my mind!

What gets me is, the price.

For around $500 you can essentially get your own printer with 4 materials ("filaments") you can load to make any variety of things.

You can print instruments, in whole or part, that can be used as something beyond a paperweight.

In my more active days, I was a Woodwinds player, but I would get turned off by seeing brochures advertising $400 mouthpieces and pushing "practice practice practice" when comparatively, on electric bass, a distortion pedal or different pair of strings made a difference on the cheap.

But for the price of filament you can pretty much make what you want.

Then there's SYOS, a French company that does (on a professional scale) what I'm talking about!

So now I'm trying to "grow" by learning a new realm of "art".

Wow. Must admit, I'd assumed that even the cheapest models would set you back a few grand!

Also, I like the fact that the video is about ocarinas lol. Just cos I've referenced them before on the forum - for no other reason than they're slightly obscure and a lot of people have never even heard of them. And it's just a pleasing word to say!

Have you actually tried making a musical instrument yourself or is it still early days?

The Ocarina I figured was the most relatable, but apparently there's models out there that are expanding flutes that let you play more than one note at once.

Right now I'm trying to make more time to download models and see what is involved in printing a mouthpiece.

I'm not sure I'd "invent" much, but just the idea of detaching myself from the "retail" of musicianship sounds interesting.

I still have to teach myself some CAD and 3d sculpting to see where I can take things.

Ben Heck on youtube also inspired me seeing as he likes modifying controllers and creating custom buttons for gaming so I was like "you know! we're not far off here!"
