68 years ago today, on April 15, 1947, Jack Roosevelt Robinson played his first game for the Brooklyn Dodgers, thereby becoming the first acknowledged[sup]1[/sup] African American player in the Major Leagues in the 20th century.[sup]2[/sup]
[sup]1[/sup]It has been alleged from various sources that several light skinned African Americans passed as white and played in the decade 1900-1910.
[sup]2[/sup]The first African American player in Major League history was Moses Fleetwood Walker who played for the Toledo Blue Stockings (then a major league team) in 1884. By the end of the 1880's, all African American players had been banned from organized baseball.
