70 people dead in Texas!

As a labourer I have a lot of respect for those who work in chemical plants or even primarily with volatile chemicals.. I wouldn't want to do it myself.

What really gets me is that with chemicals uncontained during the aformentioned explosion, the word "injured/injuries" takes on an ominous new meaning.

Yes. Judging by the size of the blast, the shock-wave alone, even without debris and projectiles, would have been enough to destroy a persons internal organs even at quite a distance. I wonder if anyone has calculated the size of the blast in tonage? A true freakish horror not seen since the Texas City disaster of 1948.

Back in the 1980s, in Houston, I had accounts with a lot of refineries in the area. Before getting past the gate you had to go through a safety course, and they issued some gear. One thing I got was a badge to clip on my shirt. It was a phosgene badge. Phosgene was one of the chemical weapons used in the trenches of WWI. I learned if a certain signal sounded and the little 'button' on the badge changed from yellow to red, I had less than a minute to don a gas mask. Scary stuff indeed. Can't imagine working in conditions like that all the time.

I've heard they had more chemicals stored there then what they were allotted to have.
