not sure if this is the right area of the forum to ask this, but i downloaded the newest version of real player somewhile ago, like last month. however there are still some clips that i cant view. it will say something isnt available

why is this?

isabeau

then yet again i can view others on real player just fine..

Ah. As I understand it, the "update download" you reqire (I'm often told that in a little message) is actually a "licence" that you need, which is most likely a download that hijacks your internet connection and replaces it with a premium rate number... if you download it.

Thankfully, RealOne.com does not have that "update"

It's the "free porn" scam, or a variation on it.

it asks you to download an update to the software you're trying to run the film clip on or something similar. The result is that the next time you try to watch, lets say, offline, it insists that you connect to the internet to see it, but it doesn't use your ISP.

But, I have to point out that you may only be able to watch it in media player ten or WINAMP. They are sometimes, although very rarely, genuine software incompatabilities. For examply, i can't see anyone being able to play a .ram file in Windows Media Player any time soon (ok I've not tried for 7 years!). Always be wary of "You need to download an update" messages. Though they're not virii, they might as well be. instead of a free dialup or BB number, you're accessing the internet through a number that costs £1.60 a minute and don't even know it

it has to do with compression to give better quality. Newer videos may have too much info to compress into the media player causing it to just play sound. That's why you can't see it but you can hear it. If you download the latest version..you will get most of your videos to play.

thank you ticklerguy. but what i cant understand is why i can view some real player stuff and not others. and its not a matter of hearing it and not seeing it. it just wont play at all, says something isnt available.

Ah. Take a note of what it is, you may be able to search for it and download it from one or two places.

Be careful with RealPlayer. It plants spyware on your PC. Use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware.

Get it here. It's free and must be updated every 1 to 2 weeks.

Also get a firewall if you don't have one already. I use Zone Alarm.

Ad-ware is an ok product, but Yahoo give you anti-spyware when you download the toolbar, it's move major spyware from your computer, also Microsoft has a beta anti-spyware software it currently testing.

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/default.mspx

I'm currently testing it for use with my company network, it's free.
